Analysis of Geographic Textbooks

Abstract:

Disertační práce prezentuje výsledky analýz vybraných učebnic zeměpisu pro střední školy. Cílem výzkumu bylo ověřit kvalitu učebnic a zjistit do jaké míry tento didaktický prostředek jeho autoři přizpůsobují kognitivním schopnostem žáků. Při výběru výzkumných metod byl kladen důraz na splnění podmínky aplikovatelnosti výsledků v praxi. Předpokládali jsme, že získané údaje budou vypovídat o „použitelnosti“ dané učebnice v procesu výuky a současně odhalí, v jakém směru je nutné učebnici zdokonalovat. Byly vybrány dva hlavní metodologické nástroje: Metoda měření didaktické vybavenosti učebnic a měření obtížnosti textu pomocí Komplexní míry obtížnosti textu, které výše uvedeným požadavkům plně vyhovují. Na počátku výzkumu byla stanovena hypotéza, která předpokládá existenci souvislosti mezi úrovní didaktické vybavenosti a přiměřeností obtížnosti textu učebnic. Platnost hlavní hypotézy potvrdilo statistické zpracování zjištěných údajů. Teoreticko – metodologická východiska práce spočívají v pojetí učebnice jako didaktického fenoménu, kde vedle vymezení pojmu, postavení v edukačním procesu, struktury a hlavních funkcí je charakterizována také úloha učebnic v současném českém školství. Velká pozornost je věnována obecně evaluaci učebnic a především aktuální situaci v zahraničním i domácím výzkumu. Jádro práce spočívá v realizaci výzkumu. Na počátku byly vymezeny výzkumné problémy, předmět výzkumu a formulovány hypotézy. Tato část dále obsahuje přehled veškerých výsledků měření včetně analýz a dílčích interpretací. Na základě zjištěných výsledků jsme přistoupili ke zhodnocení splnění cílů výzkumu a potvrzení platnosti hypotéz. Možný přínos práce je formulován v závěru z hlediska obsahového, metodologického a především z pohledu praxe. Naznačuje také další perspektivy výzkumu, zvlášť když evaluace učebnic jako součást pedagogického výzkumu je u nás v současné době stále okrajovou záležitostí.

Abstract:

The dissertation work presents the results of analyses of selected geography textbooks for secondary schools. The objective of the study was to examine a quality of the textbooks and find out to what extent the textbooks, as didactic tools, were adapted to student’s cognitive level by the authors. When selecting the study methods, an emphasis was put on a premise that the results should be applicable in the field. We supposed that the data obtained would predicate about the “applicability” of particular textbooks in the learning process as well as discover in which ways such textbooks should be improved. Two basic means of methodology were selected, i.e. (i) measurement of didactic background level of the textbook. and (ii) measurement of didactic text difficulty rate by means of Comprehensive didactic text difficulty rate; which is fully satisfying for the requirements above. A hypothesis was formulated in the beginning of the study implicating an existence of relationships between the level of textbook didactic background and adequacy of text difficulty rate. Statistic processing of the found data confirmed the validity of the basic hypothesis. Theoretical and methodology resources of the work consist in a concept of a textbook being a didactic phenomenon. Such concept defines a term, position, structure and main uses of the textbook in the education process as well as its role in contemporary Czech educational system. Major attention has been drawn to evaluation of the textbooks in general, and especially to status of foreign and national research activities. The core of the work consisted in implementation of research. In the beginning, research subject and topics were defined and hypotheses formulated. Furthermore, this part also contained an overview of all measurement results including analyses and part interpretations. The findings were followed by an evaluation of fulfilment of the research objectives, and confirmation of hypothesis validity. Potential contribution of the work from content and methodology points of view, and finally in terms of practice was formulated in conclusions. In addition, the conclusions indicate future research possibilities considering the fact that evaluation of textbooks remains a marginal issue within a pedagogical research in our country.
