Time and History in Virginia Woolf's The Years

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat pojetí času a historie v díle The Years od Virginie Woolf. V rámci způsobu vyprávění Woolf zpochybňuje některé z metod pojetí historie historiky devatenáctého století jako byl Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Macaulay nebo životopisec Leslie Stephen, který byl otcem Woolf. Woolf také odmítá principy materialistického realismu, které pozoruje ve fikci autorů jako je John Galsworthy nebo Herbert George Wells. Její kritika ztvárnění života a historie v těchto dílech ji vede k vytvoření vlastních metod přístupu ke ztvárnění času a historie ve své fikci. V díle The Years jeho autorka představuje několik úhlů pohledu na čas a historii. Tyto koncepty jsou zahrnuty v samotné formě a struktuře románu od jeho názvu, přes názvy a časové rozestupy mezi kapitolami až ke strategiím na úrovni uspořádání textu v rámci kapitol a na úrovni vět. Mimoto, aby pojala historii Woolf ji nečiní centrem vyprávění, ale staví ji na pozadí každodenního života postav. Neupouští od své metody vyprávění pomocí vnitřních procesů postav a ukazuje, že vnímání času a historie je vysoce indviduální zážitek spojený s danou jedinečností každé z postav, ale také s vnějším prostředím a náležitostí k určité generaci.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore themes of time and history in Virginia Woolf's novel The Years. In the narrative Woolf subverts some of the techniques of the traditional nineteenth century history writing by historians such as Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Macaulay or the biographer Leslie Stephen who was Woolf's father. Woolf also dismisses the principles she observes in materialist realist fiction of novelists such as John Galsworthy or Herbert George Wells. Her critique of their portrayal of life and history being generally deemed as accurate and true drives her to develop her own methods of approach to depicting time and history in her own fiction. In The Years the author offers several viewpoints on time and history. A sense of the concepts is directly embedded in the form of the novel – from the novel's title to the titling and spacing out of the chapters and strategic intra-textual aspects. Furthermore, to portray history the author does not make it the locus of the narrative but makes it a background to the ordinary everyday experience of the characters. She does not abandon her technique of exploring concepts through internal processes of the characters and shows that perception of time and history is a highly individual experience related to the innate uniqueness of each person but also to external surroundings and belonging to a specific generation.
