Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi koncentrací testosteronu a expresí sekundárních pohlavních znaků v kontextu sociálních interakcí. Role testosteronu jakožto hlavního pohlavního hormonu samců v expresi péřových ornamentů byla prokázána v několika předchozích studiích. Nicméně, exprese ornamentů byla dávána v souvislost s koncentrací testosteronu měřenou během hnízdního období, které se vyznačuje intenzivními sociálními interakcemi. Právě sociální interakce prokazatelně ovlivňují hladinu testosteronu v krvi jedince. Otázkou tedy je, zda nalezený vztah mezi ornamenty a androgeny vypovídá o vlivu testosteronu na expresi ornamentů či spíše o míře sociálních interakcí, kterým byl jedinec vystaven. Úkolem této práce proto bylo analyzovat koncentrace testosteronu v hnízdním a mimohnízdním období evropského poddruhu vlaštovky obecné (Hirundo rustica rustica) a potvrdit či vyvrátit hypotézu sociálního stresu. Podle této hypotézy testosteron neovlivňuje expresi péřových ornamentů, ale naopak míra exprese ornamentů ovlivňuje hormonální vyladění jedince. Jedinci ornamentovanější tedy podstupují více interakcí, což vede ke zvýšení koncentrace TEST v krvi.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis focuses on the relationship between testosterone concentration and expression of feather ornaments in the context of social interactions. The role of testosterone as a main sexual hormone in males was assumed in expression of feather ornaments in former studies. Nevertheless, the relationship between ornaments and hormonal levels were based on analysis of blood samples collected during the breeding season, which is characterized by intense social interactions. Even these interactions were proved to affect testosterone concentrations in the blood of male individuals. This implies the questions whether the relationships between ornaments and androgens observed in former studies give true evidence of TEST influence on the ornament expression of individuals or are more likely to reflect the intensity of their participation in social interactions. The main goal of this thesis was to analyse concentrations of testosterone in breeding and nonbreeding season in European subspecies of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica rustica) and to confirm or refuse the hypothesis of social stress. According to this hypothesis testosterone is not involved in expression of feather ornaments but conversely the extent of ornaments expression influences level of testosterone in the blood of individuals. Therefore, individuals with more distinct ornaments are most probably involved in more intense social interactions, which results in increased TEST concentrations in their blood.
