The determinants of foreign direct investment inflows in Ghana

Abstract:

Pro rozvojové země jsou PZI považovány za důležitý nástroj, jehož prostřednictvím lze dosáhnout ekonomického růstu, a ani Ghana není výjimkou. Tato práce zohledňuje faktory, které přesvědčují zahraniční investory, aby si Ghanu vybrali jako potenciální místo investic. Tudíž tato práce posuzuje vztah mezi PZI, což je závislá proměnná, a dalšími pozorovanými proměnnými, což jsou růst HDP, směnný kurz, inflace, korupce, politická stabilita a otevřenost obchodu od roku 1995 do roku 2019. Práce používá model regrese nejmenších čtverců v analýze průřezových údajů, aby přezkoumala vliv mezi závislou proměnnou (PZI) a dalšími pozorovanými proměnnými (růst HDP, inflace, otevřenost obchodu, směnný kurz, korupce a politická stabilita), u kterých lze předpokládat, že jsou klíčovými faktory PZI v Ghaně. Fyzické kontroly v systému GRETL prokázaly pozitivní vztah mezi PZI a všemi dalšími proměnnými, kromě inflace a otevřenosti trhu. Statisticky významnými proměnnými byly nicméně korupce, otevřenost trhu a růst HDP. Tato práce doporučuje postupy, které by vláda mohla použít, aby přitáhla více PZI, např. udržet inflaci stabilní, otevřít se možnostem obchodování s více zeměmi, zajistit infrastrukturu a ekonomické stimuly, které přitáhnou PZI, a potlačit korupční praktiky.

Abstract:

For developing countries, FDI is seen as an important tool for achieving economic growth and Ghana is no exception to this. This study will take into account the factors that convince foreign investors to choose Ghana as a potential investment location. Therefore, this study considers the relationship between FDI, which is the dependent variable and other observed variables which are GDP growth, exchange rate, Inflation, corruption, Political stability and trade openness from 1995 to 2019. The study made use of the ordinary least squared (OLS) regression model in a cross-sectional data analysis to examine the influence between the dependent variable (FDI) and other explanatory variables (GDP growth, Inflation, Trade Openness, Exchange rate, Corruption and Political Stability) that are expected to be determinants of FDI in Ghana. Physical checks with GRETL showed a positive relationship between FDI and all other variables except Inflation and Trade Openness. However, the statistically significant variables were Corruption, Trade Openness, and GDP growth. This study recommends policies which the government could use to attract more FDI such as keeping inflation stable, opening up to the prospect of trading with more countries and putting infrastructure and incentives in place to attract FDI as well as curbing corruption practices.
