The Black Lesbian: A New Vampire Tradition in The Gilda Stories

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat, jak faktory jako sexualita, gender a rasa ovliv-nily evoluci upírského žánru, k čemuž práce využívá rozbor románu The Gilda Stories od Jewelle Gomez. Práce vychází z hlavních rozdílů mezi tímto románem a tradicí, jako jsou například způsob, jakým upíři získávají krev a neobvyklá náklonnost, kte-rou hlavní postava cítí ke smrtelníkům, obzvláště k ženám, jež pramení mimo jiné z její příslušnosti k Afroamerické komunitě. Tímto se práce pokouší analyzovat, jak tato konkrétní postava zapadá do upírské tradice a jak ji přetváří.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse how factors such as sexuality, gender, and race of a vampire character impacted the evolution of the vampire genre and to pre-sent the realization of this evolution as portrayed in the novel The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez. Drawing on the main differences between this novel and the tradition, such as the manner of feeding and the vampire’s unusual affinity with mortals - especially women - which stems from her affiliation to the black community, the thesis sets out to analyse how this character fits into the vampire tradition and how she transforms it.
