Effectiveness of rehabilitation and exercise programs in a patient with neuropathy of the external popliteal nerve: clinical case

Abstract:

Lumbosciatica, commonly known as backache involving the sciatic nerve, is a very widespread syndrome affecting about 40% of the global population. Unlike lumbago, which only affects the lumbar and sacral region, lumbosciatica is a pain that involves from the lumbar region to the gluteus and it radiates along the lower limb down to the foot. Usually this disorder shows up ipsilateral but sometimes it may come bilaterally on the lower limbs. It may be caused by a lifestyle that forces you to sit for many hours on an incorrect position affecting, for example, people working in an office, or those who don't practice any physical activity; it may also be caused by a crushing of the disc, by osteoporosis, by spondylitis or usually by a herniated disc involving the fourth or fifth lumbar disc. A rehabilitation program is important to recover the normal daily activities, to achieve a better state of well-being and to avoid the lumbosciatica chronicisation. The late start of a physiotherapy program may have an influence on the outbreak of the external popliteal sciatic nerve neuropathy (EPSN). The treatment of a patient already presenting a chronicisation determines the reduction of operations. We will observe the effects of physical therapy through TECAR and massages on the musculature of the lower limb.

Abstract:

La lombosciatalgia, comunemente chiamata mal di schiena con interessamento del nervo sciatico, ? una sindrome molto diffusa che colpisce circa il 40% della popolazione mondiale. A differenza della lombalgia, che colpisce solamente la zona lombo-sacrale, la lombosciatalgia ? un dolore che nuoce dalla zona lombare al gluteo e si irradia lungo l'arto inferiore fino al piede. Solitamente questo ? un disturbo che si presenta omolaterale ma in alcuni casi pu? presentarsi anche bilateralmente ad entrambi gli arti inferiori. Pu? essere dovuto ad uno stile di vita che ci porta spesso a stare seduti per molte ore con una postura scorretta, ad esempio per chi lavora in un ufficio o per chi non pratica attivit? fisica, ma pu? anche essere causato da uno schiacciamento del disco, da osteoporosi, da spondiliti o da un'ernia discale con interessamento del quarto o quinto disco lombare. Un programma di riabilitazione ? importante per recuperare le normali attivit? della vita quotidiana, per ottenere un maggiore stato di benessere e per evitare la cronicizzazione della lombosciatalgia. Iniziare un programma di fisioterapia in ritardo pu? influire sull'insorgenza della neuropatia del nervo sciatico popliteo esterno (SPE). Il trattamento di un paziente che presenta gi? una cronicizzazione determina la riduzione degli interventi. Andremo ad osservare gli effetti della terapia fisica mediante TECAR e massaggi della muscolatura dell'arto inferiore.
