Abstract:

ABSTRAKTNÍ Cílem studie bylo prozkoumat účinky těžby zlata na zdraví lidí žijících v obci Obuasi. Zaměřila se na čtyři vybrané těžební komunity. AngloGold Ashanti je důlní dělníci a malí měřítko v obci. Vyšetřené otázky byly přínosy z činnosti těžby zlata, zdravotní problémy spojené s těžbou zlata, strategie ke zmírnění důsledků těžby zlata a účinnost těchto strategií. Dotazníky, pozorování a plány rozhovorů byly metody používané při shromažďování údajů. Pracovníci podzemního dolu byli postiženi nemocemi spojenými s povoláním a určitými riziky. Společnosti čelily různým zdravotním problémům, z nichž mnohé přímo souvisely s činností dolu. Malí horníci přispívají více, pokud jde o znečištění životního prostředí a další nehody spojené s lidským zdravím. Stratégie, které banská společnost prováděla s cílem snížit zdravotní problémy hornické činnosti, zahrnovaly snížení znečištění životního prostředí, kontrolu malárie, zalesňování a rekultivaci půdy. Snižování teploty a únava byly součástí strategií určených pro důlní pracovníky společnosti AngloGold a pro malé dělníky byly zavedeny alternativní postupy obnovy zlata a udržitelné živobytí. Bylo proto doporučeno, aby společnost AngloGold Ashanti pracovala na přesídlení komunit, které jsou v blízkosti svých provozních oblastí, aby se snížily negativní účinky těžby zlata.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The study aimed to examine the effects of gold mining activities on the health of people living in Obuasi Municipality. It targeted four selected mining communities. AngloGold Ashanti’s mine workers and small-scale in the Municipality. Issues investigated were the benefits derived from gold mining activities, the health problems associated with gold mining, strategies to mitigate the effects of gold mining and the effectiveness of these policies. Questionnaires, observations and interview schedules were the methods employed in data gathering. Underground mine workers were affected by occupationally related diseases and some hazards. Communities were faced with various health problems, many of which were directly related to the activities of the mine. Small-scale miners contribute more when it comes to environmental pollution and other mishaps associated to human health.Strategies implemented by the mining company to reduce the health problems of mining activities included the reduction of environmental pollution, malaria control, afforestation and reclamation of land. Heat reduction and fatigue management were among the strategies designed for AngloGold mine workers, and alternative gold recovery process and sustainable livelihood projects were implemented for small-scale miners. It was therefore recommended that AngloGold Ashanti should work towards the resettlement of communities which are close to its operational areas to reduce the harmful effects of gold mining
