Cormac McCarthy - The reception of a novel No Country for Old Men and its adaptation for the screen in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá interpretací a komparací románu Tahle země není pro starý amerického autora Cormaca McCarthyho se stejnojmennou filmovou adaptací bratří Ethana a Joela Coenových a recepcí těchto děl v českém prostředí. Práce se zaměřuje na společné a rozdílné prvky obou děl, upozorňuje na významové posuny od románu k adaptaci, na odlišnosti ve vyznění. Zaměřuje se na postihnutí specifik autorského stylu tvůrců a posouzení vztahů mezi literárním a filmovým estetickým objektem. Román je často porovnáván s jinými literárními a filmovými díly, obdobně se tomu děje i v případě adaptace. Upozorňuje se rovněž na motivy románu, které se vyskytují a opakují i v jiných McCarthyho dílech. Práce je členěna do několika kapitol: nejprve je interpretován román, posléze je přistoupeno k interpretaci filmové adaptace a k její komparaci s knižní předlohou. Jednotlivá tvrzení jsou většinou dokládána citacemi z primární a sekundární literatury.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis offers an interpretation and comparison of the novel No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy and the film adaptation of the same name by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen and looks at the reception the novel and film have received in the Czech Republic. The paper concentrates on the elements of novel and film which are the same and those which are different and points out shifts in meaning from the novel to the adaptation and differences in the tone. It focuses on understanding the specifics of the original style of the writer and directors and on a consideration of the relationship between the aesthetic object of literature and film. The novel is often compared with other works of literature and film, as is the adaptation. The paper also looks at the themes of the novel that appear and are repeated in McCarthy's other work. The diploma thesis is divided into several chapters: first there is an interpretation of the novel, then an interpretation of the film adaptation and its comparison with the book it is based on. Individual contentions are generally substantiated by quotes from primary and secondary literature.
