Deterministic models in epidemiology

Abstract:

Deterministické matematické modely jsou součástí velké škály metod, jež epidemiologie využívá. Tato práce poskytuje přehled těchto modelů, konkrétně modelů týkajících se infekčních onemocnění. Dále pojednává o veřejných zdrojích epidemiologických dat, které pomáhají vytvořit si obrázek o zdravotním stavu populace. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována modelu SIR a datům získaným ze survaillance programu chřipkových onemocnění. Data jsou následně použita k identifikaci parametrů SIR modelu a k ověření, do jaké míry je SIR model použitelný pro epidemiologické účely.

Abstract:

Deterministic mathematical models belong to the great variety of methods which epidemiology uses to reach its goals. This thesis provides an overview of a part of these models, the part regarding infectious diseases, and of the sources of epidemiological data, i.e. the data concerning health status. Especially, it focuses on the SIR model and the data from Influenza-like illnesses surveillance, which are used for the estimation of the values of the SIR model parameters and the discussion about the usefulness of the SIR model as a reflection of reality.
