3D spectroscopy of galaxies

Abstract:

The goal of the work has been to create a program for generating theoretical channel maps of the ionized gas emission in galaxies that would allow to interpret its 3D geometry and kinematics on spatial scales of the order of hundred parsecs to dozens of kiloparsecs. The considered models include spherical, disky, ring-like and conical gas configurations; the allowed kinematics is either rotation with various parametrizations of the rotation curve, or a radial streaming, so called outflow, as well as a combination of those models, i.e. a rotating outflows, so far largely neglected in the literature, despite its evident physical motivation. In the framework of the above work, an existing program for creating theoretical velocity fields was also upgraded. Both codes have been developed for the sake of their future use within the CALIFA project (Calar Alto Legacy Integral-Field spectroscopy Area survey), currently the largest 3D spectroscopy survey of nearby galaxies.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce bolo vytvorenie programu pre generovanie teoretických kanálových máp (channel maps) emisie ionizovaného plynu v galaxiách, ktoré by umožnili interpretovať jeho 3D geometriu a kinematiku na priestorových škálach stoviek parsekov až desiatok kiloparsekov. Uvažované modely zahŕňajú sférické, diskové a prstencové konfigurácie plynu; možnou kinematikou je buď rotácia pri rôzne parametrizovaných rotačných krivkách, alebo radiálne prúdenie hmoty, tzv. outflow, a rovnako kombinácia týchto modelov, t.j. rotujúci outflow, ktorý bol zatiaľ v literatúre zabúdaný navzdory jasnej fyzikálnej motivácii. V rámci vytvorenia uvedeného programu bol tiež vylepšený existujúci program pre tvorbu máp teoretických rýchlostných polí. Obidva programy boli vyvíjané pre účely budúceho využitia v rámci projektu CALIFA (Calar Alto Legacy Integral-Field spectroscopy Area survey), v súčasnej dobe najrozsiahlejšej 3D spektroskopickej prehliadke blízkych galaxií.
