Comparison of British and French colonial administration in Africa

Abstract:

V mojí diplomové práci se věnuji komparaci správy kolonií Velké Británie a Francie na africkém kontinentu. Práce se zaměřuje na období od získání kolonií až do doby dekolonizace. V první kapitole se zabývám získáváním britského a francouzského záboru v poslední třetině 19. století. Druhá část pojednává o způsobu správy Francie a Velké Británie v jejich koloniích. Francie prosazovala formu přímé správy a Británie uplatňovala ve svých závislých územích doktrínu nepřímé správy. Ve třetí kapitole se věnuji hospodářství jednotlivých území a hospodářské politice obou velmocí vůči svým koloniím. V následující části jsou případové studie. Tyto studie zdůrazňují znaky správy a ekonomiky zpracované v předchozím textu na konkrétních případech. U kolonií Francie jde o případy Francouzské západní Afriky a Alžírska a v případě britských kolonií Keňa a Nigérie.

Abstract:

I would like to present in my thesis comparison of colonial administration of Great Britain and France on the African continent. This thesis is focused on the time period from the acquisition of colonies until decolonization. In my first chapter I deal with the acquirement of French and British territories in the last quarter of the 19th century. The second chapter is focused on administration methods of France and Britain in their colonies. France applied the method of direct rule and Great Britain applied indirect rule. In the third chapter I consider colonial economies and economic and monetary policies of France and Great Britain to their colonies. The last part of my thesis is focused on case studies. In these studies I apply characteristics of the administration and economy. This situation is explained on French West Africa and Algeria in case of France and on Kenya and Nigeria in the case of Great Britain.
