The Bohemian Chronicle by Václav Hájek z Libočan and its translation by Johannes Sandel

Abstract:

The diploma thesis analyzes the Bohemian Chronicle by Václav Hájek z Libočan and its German translation by Johannes Sandel, which was published in 1596 in Old Town in Prague. The thesis discusses the language of this translation and its characteristic features. There is also a transcribed part of the Chronicle in the appendix. The thesis deals with selected phenomena connected with the translation, both at theoretical as well as practical level. Considering the theoretical part, it includes the position of German in Bohemian lands in the 16th century, the biographic information on the Bohemian Chronicle itself, its author Václav Hájek z Libočan and the translator Johannes Sandel, and also the description of the language of that age, the Early New High German (Frühneuhochdeutsch), which is briefly explained with emphasis on morphology and lexicology. This part comes already under the practical part of the thesis; all of the phenomena are supported by examples from the text. Last, an analysis of the translation is provided, more concretely the evaluation of Sandel’s translation methods and his solutions in complicated cases.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá Kronikou českou Václava Hájka z Libočan a jejím německým překladem, který byl vyhotoven Johannem Sandelem a vydán r. 1596 na Starém Městě pražském. Práce analyzuje jazyk a některé charakteristické znaky tohoto překladu, jehož transkribovaný úryvek je uveden v příloze. Práce rozebírá vybrané jevy, které se týkají zmiňovaného překladu, a to jak na teoretické, tak praktické rovině. Na rovině teoretické posuzuje pozici němčiny v českých zemích 16. století, poskytuje biografické informace o Kronice samé, Václavu Hájku z Libočan i Johannu Sandelovi. Dále se zaměřuje na jazyk této epochy, tzv. Frühneuhochdeutsch (raná nová horní němčina), která je krátce přiblížena s důrazem na morfologii a lexikologii. Tento úsek zabývající se Frühneuhochdeutsch patří již částečně k části praktické, neboť veškeré jevy jsou doloženy příklady z textu. Poté následuje část čistě praktická – analýza překladu, hodnocení překladatelských metod užitých Sandelem a evaluace jeho překladatelských postupů v komplikovaných případech.
