Polyamory - subjective experience of open relationship in monogamous society

Abstract:

Annotation: The study is focused on the alternative structure of partnership relations that violate the norm of monogamy – the sexual and emotional exclusiveness. In the psychology and also in a common life we lack a conception, which allows us to see sexual and in some cases also emotional relations existing out of a partnership, differently as an infidelity. According to the evolutionary psychology, the monogamy is part of the human nature, therefore alternative forms of partnership are considered unnatural and rare reflected in the psychological theory. The social constructivism theory provides the criticism to the evolutionary theory and constitutes the basis of this study. In the historical development of partnership forms, we can follow the line from the liberal attitude to the norm of monogamy, which creates the ground to define every sexual and emotional relationship out of a partnership as an infidelity. Nevertheless, in the contemporary monogamous society, there is a group of people, who refuse the norm of monogamy and live in an open relationship based on the polyamory. The aim of this study is to take a portrait of subjective experience of these people, which is allowed by the qualitative methodology. The analysis based on the grounded theory enables to identify motivations leading respondents to the open relationship, feelings and needs, which they experience in such relationship and coping strategies, which they use to deal with two core problems – the violation of social norms and the jealousy.

Anotácia: Štúdia sa zaoberá alternatívnym usporiadaním partnerských vzťahov, porušujúcim normu monogamie – sexuálnej a emocionálnej exkluzivity. V psychológii, ale i v bežnom živote chýba koncept, ktorý by umožňoval nazerať na mimopartnerské sexuálne, a v určitých prípadoch aj citové vzťahy, inak ako na neveru. Evolučne-psychologická teória umiestňuje pôvod monogamie do ľudskej prirodzenosti, čím sa stávajú alternatívne usporiadania partnerských vzťahov neprirodzené a málo reflektované v psychologickej teórii. Kritiku takéhoto poňatia umožňuje paradigma sociálneho konštruktivizmu, ktorá tvorí teoretické východisko práce. V historickom vývoji usporiadania partnerských vzťahov možno vidieť líniu od uvoľneného poňatia, k norme monogamie, na základe ktorej sa všetky mimopartnerské vzťahy definujú ako nevera. V súčasnej monogamnej spoločnosti však existuje skupina ľudí, ktorí túto normu neprijímajú a žijú v otvorenom vzťahu založenom na polyamorii. Cieľom práce je zachytiť a zviditeľniť subjektívne prežívanie týchto ľudí, čo umožňuje použitá kvalitatívna metodológia. Analýza na základe zakotvenej teórie umožnila identifikovať motivácie, ktoré ich k vstupu do polyamorného vzťahu viedli, pocity a potreby, ktoré v takomto vzťahu prežívajú a stratégie zvládania, ktoré používajú pri vyrovnávaní sa s dvoma hlavnými problémami, ktoré predstavuje porušenie sociálnych noriem a žiarlivosť.
