Impacts of breeding on polledness on the growth intensity of Charolais calves

Abstract:

Genetická bezrohost je jeden z nejvýraznějších šlechtitelských trendů u masných plemen skotu. S vývojem celé společnosti se v chovu skotu rohy stávají problematické nejen z pohledu bezpečnosti, zranění, ale také se řeší otázka způsobu jejich odstranění. U některých masných plemen skotu je již nyní genetická bezrohost zakotvena jako plemenný znak. V podvědomí chovatelů je genetická bezrohost spojována s konstitučně slabšími a tělesně méně výraznými zvířaty. Především u plemen s intenzivním růstem, používaných i v užitkovém křížení je v případě používání genetické bezrohosti potřeba tyto pochybnosti potvrdit nebo vyvrátit a výsledky aplikovat v chovatelské praxi. Tato diplomová práce byla zaměřena na vyhodnocení vlivu šlechtění na genetickou bezrohost na užitkovost telat plemene Charolais. V práci byly porovnány rozdíly mezi bezrohými (P – bezrohý, V – volný roh) a rohatými zvířaty (R) v hmotnostech zjištěných v kontrole užitkovosti (porodní, 120, 210 a 365 dnech), přírůstcích, lineárním hodnocení a plemenné hodnotě. Současně byly vyhodnoceny rozdíly mezi pohlavím ve sledovaných parametrech. Při vyhodnocení vlivu pohlaví byl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl (p ˂ 0,05) v porodních hmotnostech a statisticky vysoce významný rozdíl (p ˂ 0,01) v hmotnostech a přírůstcích ve věku 120, 210, 365 dnů v prospěch býků. V lineárním hodnocení byl nalezen statisticky vysoce významný rozdíl (p ˂ 0,01) ve výšce v kříži v prospěch jalovic a statisticky významný rozdíl (p ˂ 0,05) u šířky a hloubky hrudníku v prospěch býků. Při vyhodnocení vlivu bezrohosti nebyl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl (p > 0,05) mezi fenotypy P, V a R v žádném sledovaném parametru. Na základě výsledků lze konstatovat, že genetická bezrohost neovlivnila užitkové parametry, exteriér ani plemennou hodnotu sledovaných zvířat.

Abstract:

Genetic polledness is one of the most significant breeding trends of beef cattle. In connection with the development of the whole society, horns are becoming a problematic issue in cattle farming. On one hand, there is the concern about safety and possible injury of the livestock. On the other hand, the question of removing their horns is dealt with. Genetic polledness has already been recognised as one of the breeding traits of beef cattle. A number of breeders connect genetic polledness with physically weaker and less strong animals. The need to prove or disprove any possible doubts arouses when the breeds with the intensive growth, which are also used for commercial crossbreeding, are concerned. The results should be applied in breeding field experience. This master thesis focuses on the evaluation of the influence of breeding on genetic polledness and on calf yields of the Charolais breed. The work compares differences in weight ascertained during the yield checks (birth weight, weight at 120, 210 and 365 days of age), gains, linear evaluation and breeding value between hornless (P – hornless, V – scur) and horned (R)animals. At the same time, the differences between the sexes of cattle in monitored parameters have been evaluated. When evaluating the effect of sexes, the birth weight was statistically significant (P˃0.05) and the weight and gains at 120, 210 and 365 days of age were statistically highly significant (P˃0.01) in favour of bulls. As far as the linear evaluation is concerned, the hip height was highly significant (P˃0.01) in favour of heifers and the chest width and depth was statistically significant (P˃0.05) in favour of bulls. Evaluating the influence of polledness, statistically significant difference (P˃0.05) has not been found among the phenotypes P, V and R in any of the observed parameters. According to the results, it can be said that genetic polledness does not influence efficiency parameters, exterior or breeding value of animals.
