Television and ontological security of elderly people living in a retirement home

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis focused on analysis of the role of television in forming the ontological security of the selected group of elderly living in a retirement home. The teoretical section we define the concept of ontological security, which was first used by british sociologist Anthony Giddens; and the concept of total institution, first used by canadian sociologist Erving Goffman, applied onto a retirement home, which shows traits of the total institution. In the analytical section of the thesis we use the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods: a screening questionnaire, a semi-structured interview and a participant observation. The core of the thesis is the case study of semi-structured interviews, which were conducted with mentally and physically active inhabitants of the retirement home, trying to understand and explain their relationship to television as a factor contributing to the generation of their sense of ontological security.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zameriava na analýzu televízie a jej role pri utváraní ontologického bezpečia vybranej skupiny seniorov žijúcich v domove pre seniorov. V teoretickej časti našej práce popisujeme koncept ontologického bezpečia, ktorý zaviedol britský sociológ Anthony Giddens. V práci sa opierame tiež o koncept totálnej inštitúcie od kanadského sociológa Ervinga Goffmana v súvislosti s domovom pre seniorov, ktorý nesie znaky totálnej inštitúcie. V práci využívame kombináciu kvantitatívnych a kvalitatívnych metód, a to screeningový dotazník, pološtrukturované rozhovory a zúčastnené pozorovanie. Jadrom práce je prípadová štúdia mentálne a fyzicky aktívnych obyvateľov domova pre seniorov a ich vzťah k televízií ako spolutvorcovi ontologického bezpečia.
