Electron microscopy investigation of multilayers material structures in intensive heat sources condition

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá elektronovou mikroskopií a jejím využitím v materiálových vědách. V první části je popsáno testování vlastností zirkoniových materiálů používaných v jaderné energetice jako nosiče a pouzdra jaderného paliva pro reaktory elektráren v reakci na havarijní stav reaktoru. Na materiál obalující tablety nukleárního paliva v jaderném reaktoru působí spolu se zvýšenou teplotou vodní prostředí vedoucí k vytváření oxidických vrstev i k pronikání kyslíku i vodíku do materiálu, kde jsou tyto prvky schopny změnit jeho vlastnosti. Pro čtyři slitiny bylo provedeno prozkoumání hloubkové koncentrace kyslíku pomocí lokální prvkové analýzy využívající přímo buzené charakteristické rentgenové záření vznikající v materiálu interakcí s elektronovým svazkem a tato koncentrace v závislosti na tepelné historii materiálů porovnána s obsahem vodíku a mechanickými vlastnostmi slitin. Byl stanoven vliv předoxidace a vysokoteplotního zatěžování na obsah kyslíku a korelace množství kyslíku na indentační tvrdost slitin zjištěnou pomocí nanoindentačních měření a velikost základní buňky zirkonia stanovené pomocí rentgenové difrakce. V druhé části se práce soustřeďuje na oblast tenkovrstvých solárních článků, kde je elektronová mikroskopie schopna zobrazit a prozkoumat materiál až na úroveň atomových rovin a spolu s rentgenovou difrakcí a optickými metodami je ze získaných údajů možno stanovit strukturu materiálu a její vliv na pozorované vlastnosti. Tato měření jsou použita na zkoumání tenkých vrstev křemíku oddělených křemíkovým oxidem a nitridem před a po vysokoteplotním žíhání, během něhož v těchto vrstvách začínají růst nanorozměrné krystality křemíku. Tyto krystality působí jako kvantové tečky, u kterých v amorfním okolním materiálu kvantově-rozměrový efekt způsobí změnu velikosti šířky zakázaného pásu, čímž je tento materiál schopen absorbovat fotony s jinou minimální energií. Tato vlastnost z tohoto materiálu činí ideálního kandidáta na laditelné intrinsické vrstvy tandemového solárního článku. Je popsána a zobrazena struktura materiálu pomocí transmisní elektronové mikroskopie a porovnána s informacemi získanými z rentgenové difrakce, kdy je pomocí obou metod stanovena struktura pozorovaných tenkých vrstev, přičemž vliv této struktury na změnu velikosti zakázaného pásu je dokumentován optickými měřeními.

Abstract:

This work deals with electron microscopy and its application in material science. First section describes the testing properties of zirconium materials used in nuclear power plants as carriers and cases of nuclear fuel in response to the emergency state of the reactor. The water environment operated at elevated temperature in the reactor take effect to the material, leading to the formation of oxide layers as well as the penetration of oxygen and hydrogen into the material, where these elements are able to change material properties. The in-depth oxygen concentration profile for four zirconium alloys was carried out from the local elemental analysis using directly excited characteristic X-rays generated in the material by interaction with the electron beam. The concentration profiles depend on the thermal history of the material and it was compared with the hydrogen content and the mechanical properties of the alloys. The effect of pre-oxidation and high temperature annealing to the oxygen content was determined and the correlation between oxygen content and indentation hardness from nanoindentation measurements was calculated for all the alloys. Unit cell size of the zirconium from X-ray diffraction was determined for different oxygen content in the material. Second section of the work is focused on the area of thin-film solar cells, where electron microscopy are able to view and examine the material in the atomic planes level and together with the data obtained from X-ray diffraction and optical methods was used to determine the structure of the material which influences the observed properties. These measurements were used for the examination of thin layers of silicon separated by silicon oxide and nitride in thin films before and after high-temperature annealing. In these layers, the annealing roots the growth of nano-sized silicon crystallites as a quantum-dots acting in the surrounding amorphous material by the quantum-size effect to resize the band gap of the material and therefore the minimum photon energy required for absorption. This property of the material is an ideal candidate for the tunable intrinsic layer of the tandem solar cells. The structure of the material was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and compared together with the X-ray diffraction analysis to determine the real structure of material. The change of band gap size due to the effect of this structure was documented by optical measurements.
