Married Priest? The Debate on the Celibacy in Bohemian Lands in the Age of Enlightenment

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o diskuzi o kněžském celibátu v době osvícenství v zemích Koruny české. Autor analyzuje mnoho tištěných pramenů s cílem rekonstruovat vnitřní i vnější vývoj debaty, jež byla součástí celoevropské kontroverze. Problém je reflektován v časopisech, brožurách, polemických traktátech, kázáních či akademických teologických dílech. Nejintenzivnější diskuze proběhla v osmdesátých letech 18. století, kdy byl povinný celibát zpochybněn početnými autory, obvykle kněžími, včetně několika univerzitních profesorů. Kritici prohlašovali, že celibát škodí populaci; jiní (Caspar Royko, Joseph Lauber či Josef Dobrovský) věřili, že odporuje přirozenosti a způsobuje smilstvo. Existovala také řada obhájců zákona, kteří používali hlavně tradiční argument čistoty nutné pro posvátnou oběť. Za důležitou byla pokládána rovněž raně křesťanská disciplína. Zdá se, že kritici byli v menšině, a v devadesátých letech veřejná kontroverze zmizela. Přesto mohla silně ovlivnit mladý klérus.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the discussion about the priestly celibacy during the time of the Enlightenment in the lands of the Crown of Bohemia. The author analyses many printed sources to reconstruct the internal and external evolution of the debate which was the part of the European-wide controversy. The problem is reflected in journals, pamphlets, polemical tractates, sermons, or academic theological writings. The most intensive discussion took place in 1780s, when the mandatory celibacy was questioned by numerous writers, usually priests, including some university professors. The celibacy was claimed to harm the population, while some other critics (e. g. Caspar Royko, Joseph Lauber, Josef Dobrovský) believed that it opposes the nature and causes adultery. There were also many apologists of the law, using mainly the traditional argument of the purity needed for the Holy Sacrifice. The early Christian discipline was considered to be important, as well. The critics seem to have been in a minority and in 1790s the public controversy disappeared. However, it might have had a strong influence on the young clergy.
