Theophanes the Greek and his murals in Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Novgorod

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Teofanos Řek a jeho fresky v kostele Spasa Preobraženija v Novgorodu“ je rozborem existující literatury o významném byzantském umělci Teofanu Řekovi, který na pomezí dvou historických epoch, někdy kolem roku 1378, navštěvuje Novgorod a zakládá tam novou uměleckou školu. V práci se porovnávají různé teorie a názory sovětských a současných historiků umění s cílem sestavení plnohodnotného obrázku o významu a roli Teofana Řeka ve vývoje ruské umělecké tradice. Nejdřív byly rozebrány kroniky a písemní svědectví dokumentující přítomnost významného umělce v Novgorodu a Moskvě. Po sestavení charakteristiky jeho osobnosti bylo třeba se zmínit o ideologických proudech v Byzanci a popsat společenský a kulturní život v Novgorodu na konci XIV. století. Velká kapitola byla věnována architektonickému popisu chrámu Spasa Preobraženija v Ilyně ulici a vysvětlení jeho historického významu. Konečně se autorka pokusila za pomoci různých literárních zdrojů rekonstruovat původní ikonografický program chrámu a uvést jeho rozličné interpretace. Názorným příkladem posloužila výzdoba jiných novgorodských chrámů postavených ve stejném období, například, chrámu Fjodora Stratilata nebo kostela Zesnutí ve Volotovém poli. Po stylistické analýze fresek novgorodských chrámů shrnula autorka výsledky svého bádání a dála vyčerpávající charakteristiku osobnosti Teofana Řeka spolu s hodnocením jeho uměleckého přínosu.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis „Theophanes the Greek and his murals in Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Novgorod“ is an analysis of the existing literature about one significant Byzantine artist: Theophanes the Greek, who moved to Novgorod around 1378 and established a new art school there. In this particular diploma work the author compares different theories and opinions of Soviet and contemporary art historians to show importance and role - Theophanes the Greek played in development of medieval Russian artistic traditions. At first stage of the work chronicles and written sources, that contained a mention of the artist’s presence in Novgorod and Moscow, were studied. After determining the characteristics of his personality it was then necessary to describe the ideological movements in Byzantium and investigate social and cultural life in Novgorod at the end of the 14th century. A special chapter was dedicated to the architectural description of the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street along with the explanation of its historical significance. Finally, with the help of various literary sources, the author attempted to reconstruct the original iconographic program of the church and mention its different interpretations. Decorations of other Novgorod churches, such as the Church of Fjodora Stratilata or the Assumption Church in Volotovo, were used as illustrative examples for the task. After a stylistic analysis of the discovered frescoes the author proceeded to a conclusion, in which a comprehensive characterization of Theophanes the Greek´s figure together with the assessment of his genuine artistic contribution was given.
