Afro-american Music as a Form of Ethnic Identification

Abstract:

V průběhu času, hudebníci Afroamerického původu vytvořili několik hudebních žánrů, z nichž za nejstarší jsou považovány písně otroků a spirituály, dále pak blues a jazz, až po nejsoučasnější Rap, včetně nespočtu hudebních žánrů odvozených od těchto základních. Ve všech těchto hudebních žánrech se opakovaně objevují charakteristické prvky, které mají původ v kmenové tradici Afrických národů. Hlavním argumentem práce je tvrzení, že uchováváním tradice svých předků, Afroameričané svou hudbu užívají jako formu vyjádření společné etnické identity.

Abstract:

Throughout history, musicians of African-American origin have developed several music genres, beginning with the early Slave work songs and Negro Spirituals, through Blues and Jazz music, to the most recent genre of the Rap music, including numerous sub-genres derived from the original ones. The music produced by artists of African origin has always used and still does use as its basics the unique elements that have been brought to America by displaced Africans as part of their oral tradition. Typical musical patterns such as repetition, complex rhythm, call-and-response as well as the oral tradition of toasting and signifying tend to reoccur in African-American music genres over and over again. The thesis argues that by recalling traditional musical expression of African ancestors, through music, African-American people express their group identity. In this manner, African-American music serves as a form of ethnic identification.
