A semantic analysis of the verbs hide and conceal

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je provést sémantickou analýzu dvou synonymních sloves 'conceal' and 'hide.' Práce se zaměřuje především na hledání drobných rozdílů mezi významy těchto sloves, zkoumá ovšem také, jak jsou tato slova v jazyce běžně užívána. Jádro tvoří korpusová analýza, která studuje kolokační chování oněch synonym. Práce se dělí na pět částí: úvodu, teoretické části, praktické části, shrnutí a závěru. V teoretická část představuje základní sémantické pojmy, jejichž znalost je zapotřebí k následné analýze. Analýzu pak tvoří dvě hlavní části: slovníková analýza a korpusová analýza. Slovníková analýza ověřuje a srovnává konceptuální významy sloves 'conceal' and 'hide', jak se objevují ve slovních Anglického jazyka, anglických tezaurech, a slovnících synonym. Korpusová analýza se zaměřuje na kolokační chování sloves, převážně pak na předměty a rozvíjející větné členy, které se vyskytují v okolí zkoumaných sloves. Výsledky sémantické analýzy jsou okomentovány ve shrnutí. V závěru je celé práce zrekapitulována.

Abstract:

The aim of the present thesis is to provide a semantic analysis of two synonymous verbs 'conceal' and 'hide'. This work investigates the subtle differences that can be identified in the semantic content of the verbs, as well as their actual language use. The core presents a corpus analysis, which studies the collocational behaviour of the synonyms. The thesis is divided into five parts: introduction, theoretical part, analytical part, summary and conclusion. The theoretical part introduces some of the basic semantic concepts, which are necessary for the subsequent semantic analysis. Analysis is constituted by two main parts: a dictionary analysis and a corpus analysis. The dictionary analysis examines and compares the conceptual meanings of the verbs 'conceal' and 'hide' as they appear in the Dictionaries of the English language, English thesauri and the dictionaries of synonyms. The corpus analysis focuses on collocational behaviour of the verbs, especially then on the objects and modifiers, which occur in the environment of the verbs in question. The analysis is commented in the summary. The thesis is recapitulated in the conclusion
