Tradition versus Concept in Contemporary Czech Painting

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce s názvem Tradice versus koncept v současném českém malířství si klade za cíl analyzovat situaci českého malířství naší doby, a to konkrétně dvě hlavní protikladné tendence, jimiž jsou příklon ke konceptu na jedné straně a zachování tradice (tradičního ideálu krásy) na straně druhé. Pokusí se dokázat, že obě tyto tendence jsou rovnocenné, a nastínit problémy a otázky, které ze zmíněného rozdělení malířství vyplývají. Například: je tradiční malba už zbytečný přežitek a pouze dozvuk něčeho minulého, který již nemá v dnešním umění místo, anebo je to umělecký postup, který je s konceptuálním malířstvím rovnocenný, či ho dokonce převyšuje? Měli by umělci rozvíjet i klasické techniky nebo spíše přemýšlet, jak vytvořit co nejoriginálnější koncept? Omezuje čerpání z určitého estetického kánonu umělcovu představivost a kreativitu anebo naopak rozvíjí možnosti reprezentace umělcem vybraných témat?

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis titled Tradition versus Concept in Contemporary Czech Painting aims to analyse the current situation of Czech painting, namely the two main contradictory tendencies, which are firstly, the trend to the concept on one hand and secondly, the preservation of tradition (traditional ideal of beauty) on the other. It attempts to prove that both of these tendencies are equivalent and it outlines the problems and questions which arise from the mentioned separation of painting. For example: is traditional painting already an useless relic – only a last echo of something that no longer deserves to be a part of contemporary art – or is it an artistic process, which is equivalent to the conceptual painting or even exceeds it? Should the artists develop the classical techniques too or rather think about how to create the most original concept? Does the drawing inspiration from any aesthetic canon limit the artist's imagination and creativity or does it, on the contrary, develop the representational possibilities of topics selected by the artist?
