Beta diversity of forest understory at intermediate scale

Abstract:

Jedním z oblíbených témat ekologie se v posledních letech staly rozklady variance ve společenstvech vedené snahou určit podíl prostorově strukturované variability a variability vysvětlené proměnnými prostředí. Část variability strukturované podle prostorových modelů bez dalšího vlivu stanovištních faktorů se běžně vysvětluje jako důsledek omezeného šíření diaspor přítomných druhů. Takový přístup je ale z různých důvodů problematický. Například není jisté, nakolik tato frakce skutečně souvisí s uzpůsobením druhů k šíření. Nevíme ani, do jaké míry je její velikost ovlivněna výběrem proměnných prostředí vstupujících do rozkladu variance. Pokusila jsem se proto na příkladu podrostu tří lesních společenstev prozkoumat vztah této čistě prostorové variability a disperzních charakteristik jednotlivých druhů. Zaměřila jsem se také na význam měřených proměnných prostředí při odčerpávání variability vysvětlené prostorem a za použití Ellenbergových indikačních hodnot i na hledání dalších proměnných, které měřeny nebyly. Vztah mezi dispersal traits druhů a čistě prostorovou variabilitou v jejich abundancích se mi nepodařilo nalézt. Potvrdilo se tím, že při intepretaci čistě prostorových struktur je třeba opatrnosti, protože vlastně nejsme schopni říci, čeho jsou projevem. Zároveň se nepotvrdilo, že by se zařazením běžně nezjišťovaných podrobnějších údajů o půdním chemismu mezi vysvětlující proměnné výrazně snížil podíl čistě prostorové variability. Hledání neměřených proměnných bylo úspěšné jen zčásti. Jak společenstva, tak zejména druhy se z hlediska podílů vysvětlené variability projevují dosti odlišně, více než na zastoupení disperzních charakteristik závisí zřejmě na kontextu, ve kterém se nacházejí.

Abstract:

Partitioning of ecological variation into spatial and environmental components has become a frequent topic in ecology. The proportion of so called pure spatial variation is usually related to the importance of dispersal processes, i.e. to dispersal limitation. Widespread as it is, this way of reasoning is somewhat spurious. For example, it is not clear whether the pure space actually relates to individual species dispersal traits. Moreover, the precise amount of pure spatial variation we get from the analysis is to an unknown extent influenced by the choice of environmental variables we were able to collect in the field. Here, I partitioned the components of mesoscale variation of understory vegetation and related the obtained fractions to several dispersal traits. The partitioning was performed both at the community and species level. I also quantified the contribution of two groups of environmental variables (i.e. with and without soil chemistry) to spatial structures found in the data. Finally I tried to find important unmeasured variables using Ellenberg indicator values. There was almost no significant relationship between dispersal traits and the components of variation. This suggests that one should be careful while speaking about dispersal limitation in the context spatial structures because it remains unclear how to account for the spatial fraction of variation. When added to the model, soil chemistry data didn’t explain much of the spatially structured variation. Only one important unmeasured variable was found. At the species level (and to a lesser extent at the community level), the obtained fractions of variation differed considerably showing no link with dispersal characteristics. I hypothesize that the performance of species is rather context-dependent.
