People Who Choose to Live in Another Era: Study of Collective Memory

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je založena na zúčastněném pozorování a polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s reenactory druhé světové války. Práce pojednává o problematice reenactmentu a autenticity na pozadí Slavností svobody, které jsou událostí oslavující osvobození Plzně americkou armádou v roce 1945. Cílem práce je porozumění základním problémům spojeným s autenticitou v prostředí plzeňské reenactingové "komunity", zejména vyjednávání a manifestování autenticity a její funkce jako prostředku formování kolektivní paměti obyvatel Plzně. Došla jsem k závěru, že prostředí plzeňské reenactingové "komunity" není homogenní. Je strukturované autenticitou jakožto aktérským konceptem. Autenticita tedy slouží jako prvek, který rozděluje prostředí reenactorů na více autentické a méně autentické reenactory. Druhým základním zjištěním, které jsem učinila, je, že se autenticita ztělesněná ve formě historických rekonstrukcí stává součástí kolektivní paměti publika těchto historických rekonstrukcí, a přetváří tak jeho pohled na historii.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis is based on participant observation and semi-structured interviews with reenactors of the Second World War. The thesis discusses an issue of reenactment and authenticity on the background of Liberation Festival, which is an event that celebrates liberation of Pilsen by American Army in 1945. The goal of the thesis is to make a sense of the main problems linked to the authenticity in the milieu of Pilsen reenactment "community", particularly of negotiating and demonstrating authenticity and its function as a means of shaping of collective memory of Pilsen inhabitants. I conclude that the milieu of Pilsen reenactment "community" is not homogenous. It is structured by authenticity as an agent's concept. Authenticity serves then as an element that divides the milieu of reenactors into more authentic reenactors and less authentic reenactors. The second fundamental finding I've made is that authenticity embodied in the form of historical reconstructions becomes a part of collective memory of the audience of these historical reconstructions and transforms its view of history.
