Between Manuscripts and Books: the Logic and Dynamics of Contemporary Czech Literary Field through the Perspective of Book Publishers

Abstract:

V této práci se zabývám logikou a dynamikou současného českého lite-rárního pole, jak je vnímána a ovlivňována knižními nakladateli, vý-znamnými literárně-zprostředkovatelskými hráči daného prostoru. Za-znamenávám způsoby, jak nakladatelé s literaturou v procesu běžně pra-cují, jak o přijatých, opomíjených či odmítnutých rutinách přemýšlejí, jak je ospravedlňují, vysvětlují a hodnotí. Teoreticky a metodologicky výzkum ukotvuji modelem literárního pole uměleckého francouzského sociologa Pierra Bourdieu, doplňuji jej o vybrané mediologické poznatky k fungování kulturních průmyslů, usouvztažňuji s charakteristikou českého knižního provozu. Výzkum koncipuji jako kvalitativní, explorativní, synchronně orientovaný, sondu do fragmentár-ně prozkoumaného terénu. Zařazuji do něj nakladatele, kteří publikují českou a/nebo zahraniční beletrii, komerční a/nebo uměleckou a pracují v malých, středních či velkých podnicích. Centrální složkou výzkumného archivu jsou polostrukturované rozhovory s nakladatelskými profesioná-ly. Zaznamenávám, že v současnosti dominantní pravidla nakladatelského jednání zvýznamňují rychlost, efektivnost, širokou přístupnost, principy dříve závazné především v komerčním pólu literárního pole. Ilustruji, rozporuji, interpretuji různé nakladatelské strategie a praxe, v nichž se ony imperativy projevují, závěrem zvažuji, zda je číst jako doklad mize-ní relativní autonomie literárního pole, jeho odkouzlouvání či spíše transponování.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the logics and dynamics of contemporary Czech literary field as perceived and modified by book publishers, its key in-termediaries and gatekeepers. I observe publishers’ daily routines, I mark their process of ruminating which strategies and praxes to accept, which to marginalize, or which to reject. As for theoretical and methodological setting, I ground the project in the model of literary field by Pierre Bourdieu, I enhance it with remarks about the mechanisms of media and culture industries, and I complete it with contextual information regard-ing Czech book market. I frame the research as qualitative, exploratory, and synchronic, as a probe to a relatively under-examined terrain. Within the research, I include small, medium or large publishing houses who produce fiction, Czech or translated, high-brow or popular. Central to the collected data are semistructured interviews with publishing profes-sionals. I argue that the dominant rules of nowadays publishers’ actions accentuate the principles of high speed, effectivity, and broad accessabil-ity, which were formerly important rather in the commercial pole of literary field. I illustrate and interpret different strategies and praxes in which these principles manifest. Finally, I consider whether to read them as a signs of gradual disenchantment of the literary field, vanishing of its relative autonomy, or rather as a needed transposition.
