Tradition versus fashion: Forms of residential architecture in cities of Western Europe

Abstract:

The goal of this Bachelor thesis is to divide residential architecture into two groups – traditional and fashionable style. To the present day, The Great Britain and The Netherlands have been holding on traditional construction and aesthetical principles. On the other hand, French architecture preferred to follow modernity, progress and being fashionable. The thesis attempts to analyse reasons responsible for keeping or abandoning traditional values – political, religious, economic or environmental causes – and to find a house-type representing every trend, especially the traditional one.

Abstract:

Práca si kladie za cieľ porovnať dva prúdy v architektúre obytných mestských budov. Na jednej strane stoja Veľká Británia a Holandsko – krajiny, ktoré sa držia tradičných konštrukčných a estetických postupov, na strane druhej Francúzsko, ktoré opúšťa takéto postupy v prospech módneho pokroku. Práca skúma dôvody, ktoré spôsobili pretrvanie alebo odklon od tradičných hodnôt – politické, náboženské, prírodné či hospodárske. Zároveň chce vymedziť typizovaný príklad tradičného domu v duchu národnej identity a prípadné spoločné znaky domov moderného prúdu.
