Intraspecific variability of Senecio jacobaea (Asteraceae) in the Pannonia and the Carpathians

Abstract:

Ke studiu karyologické a morfologické variability druhu Senecio jacobaea byla použita metoda počítání chromozomů, průtoková cytometrie a metody morfometrické. Cytologické vyšetření moravských lokalit druhu Senecio jacobaea přineslo poznatek, že Moravou probíhá kontaktní zóna populací tetraploidních (2n = 40) a oktoploidních (2n = 80), které sem zasahují z Panonie. V této zóně se populace jednotlivých ploidních úrovní obvykle nemísí, jen výjimečně se na jedné lokalitě oba cytotypy setkávají. Příkladem je lokalita Slatinky u Prostějova, kde se vyskytují nejen tetraploidní a oktoploidní jedinci, ale také jedinci hexaploidní s 2n = 60. Jde o první známou smíšenou populaci obou cytotypů v České republice, a také první nález hexaploidů v ČR. Pro morfometrické zpracování moravských populací S. jacobaea bylo použito 7 znaků na úborech. Tetraploidní a oktoploidní cytotyp podle výsledků studie nelze pomocí vybraných morfologických znaků navzájem odlišit, protože se v hodnotách znaků zčásti překrývají. Přesto tu existuje tendence k morfologické rozrůzněnosti obou cytotypů, která je dobře zřetelná, pokud srovnáme průměrné hodnoty morfometrických znaků pro populace. Pilotní analýza ekologických nároků tetraploidního a oktoploidního cytotypu ukázala, že oktoploidní jedinci preferují spíše teplejší a sušší stanoviště s menším množstvím živin než jedinci tetraploidního cytotypu. Na základě výsledků morfologických, karyologických a studia literárních pramenů je možné podpořit hypotézu o záměně Senecio jacobaea a S. erucifolius na lokalitě u Moravského Krumlova. V daném prostoru byla zjištěna pouze populace oktoploidních rostlin druhu S. jacobaea, a nikoli druh S. erucifolius.

Abstract:

Main methods for study of karyological and morphological variability of the species Senecio jacobaea were chromosome counting, flow cytometry, and morphometric methods. Karyological screening of Moravian populations ascertained a contact zone between tetraploid populations (2n = 40) and octoploid populations (2n = 80). This contact zone extends from the Panonian area there. Mixed population of ploidy levels does not usually occur in this zone. We can find both cytotypes only within one mixed population in Moravia: in locality Slatinky near Prostějov, there are tetraploid and octoploid plants, and are even hexaploid ones (2n = 60). It is the first documentation of mixed population of the species S. jacobaea with both cytotypes and the first discovery of the hexaploids in the Czech Republic. For the morphometric analysis of the Moravian populations S. jacobaea 7 morphological characters on the inflorescence were used. According to the study, these morphological characters do not distinguish the tetraploid and the octoploid cytotype; the characters partially overlap each other. But there is a some tendency for distinguishing, which is visible on the comparision of the average values of this characters for populations. A preliminary analysis of the ecological demands of the tetraploid and octoploid cytotypes revealed that the octoploid plants prefer rather warmer and dryer habitats with a lower nutrients than the plants of the tetraploid cytotype. Based on the study of the literature sources and both morphological and karyological results, it is possible to confirm a hypothesis about the mistake of determination of the species Senecio jacobaea and S. erucifolius from vicinity of Moravský Krumlov. There was confirmed only population of octoploids (2n = 80) belonging to the species S. jacobaea, not to S. erucifolius.
