Evolution of the feminine myth in the Belgian French written drama: analysis of the figures of Ariadne and Antigone

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis is to analyze the image of the female myths in the Belgian drama with the aid of ancient Greek myths - Ariadne and Antigone. The image of this subject which is widely used in Belgian literature is based on six works which together cover the entire Belgian literature and all the periods of Belgian theatre history: "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue" by Maurice Maeterlinck, "Qui n’a pas son Minotaure?" by Marguerite Yourcenar, "Ariane et Don Juan ou Le Désastre" by Claire Lejeune, "L’autre Antigone" by Cara, "Antigone voilée" by François Ost, and "Si je crève, ce sera d’amour" by Axel Cornil. The theoretical part of this thesis explains relationship between Belgium, imaginariness and myths, status of female myths in Belgian literature and evolution of the status of Belgian women in general, it analyses characteristic elements of the original myths of Ariadne and Antigone, and presents authors of each drama along with their artistic intentions. The analytical part primarily focuses on the analysis of the plot, settings and title of each play, then on the characterization of Ariadne and Antigone, the traditional elements of the myths, their past, present and future, their attitude to men, other women and love, and their autoperception. Furthermore, the thesis explores the influence of place and period in which the plays were written (which is Belgium of the last three centuries) on the image of these myths. Finally, the thesis focuses on the comparison of Ariadne and Antigone with the character of Don Juan of author‘s bachelor thesis.

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské práce je analyzovat podobu vývoje ženských mýtů v belgické divadelní literatuře za pomoci antických řeckých mýtů Ariadny a Antigony. Obraz tohoto hojně využívaného námětu v belgické literatuře vychází z šesti děl pokrývajících celou belgickou literární tvorbu a všechna období historie belgického divadla: "Ariane et Barbe-Bleue" od Maurice Maeterlincka, "Qui n’a pas son Minotaure?" od Marguerite Yourcenar, "Ariane et Don Juan ou Le Désastre" od Claire Lejeune, "L’autre Antigone" od Cary, "Antigone voilée" od François Osteho a "Si je crève, ce sera d’amour" od Axel Cornila. Teoretická část práce se věnuje osvětlení vztahu Belgie, imaginárna a mýtů, postavení ženských mýtů v belgické literatuře a vývoji postavení belgických žen obecně, rozebírá charakteristické prvky původních mýtů Ariadny a Antigony, a představuje autory jednotlivých děl spolu s jejich uměleckými záměry. Analytická část se nejdříve zaměřuje na rozbor zápletky, prostředí děje a názvu jednotlivých her, poté se věnuje analýze charakteristiky postav Ariadny a Antigony, tradičním elementům mýtů, jejich minulosti, přítomnosti a budoucnosti, jejich vztahům k mužům, jiným ženám a lásce a jejich sebevnímání. Práce se rovněž zaobírá vlivem místa a doby vzniku divadelních her, tedy Belgie posledních tří století, na podobu těchto mýtů. Nakonec se zaměřuje na porovnání Ariadny a Antigony s postavou Dona Juana z autorčiny bakalářské práce.
