The Legacy of 9/11: Examining the Impact on US Migration Policy, Public Attitudes towards Muslims and Arabs, and the Media

Abstract:

After 9/11, the U.S. experienced significant changes in its migration policy. These changes included increased security measures and stricter immigration laws. At the same time, the attitudes of Americans towards minorities also shifted, with many expressing fear and mistrust towards those who were perceived to be a potential threat to country's security. The attacks were also reflected in the way that minorities were portrayed in the US media that often depicted them as criminals or terrorists. The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to trace the impact of the legislative measures introduced during the presidency of George W. Bush on the lives of minority groups, namely Muslims and Arabs, the perception of these minorities by the majority society and the role played by the media. The thesis will be written in English.

Abstract:

Po teroristických útocích z 11. září 2001 došlo ve Spojených státech Amerických k významným změnám v migrační politice. Tyto změny zahrnovaly zvýšená bezpečnostní opatření a přísnější imigrační zákony. Současně se změnil postoj Američanů k menšinám, přičemž mnoho z nich projevovalo strach a nedůvěru vůči těm, kteří byli považováni za potenciální hrozbu pro národní bezpečnost. Útoky se odrazily i na způsobu, jakým byly menšiny prezentovány v amerických médiích, která je často líčila jako zločince nebo teroristy. Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je vysledovat, jaký dopad měla legislativní opatření zavedená během prezidenství George W. Bushe na život menšinových skupin obyvatelstva, konkrétně Muslimů a Arabů, vnímání těchto menšin ze strany většinové společnosti a roli, kterou při tom sehrála média. Práce bude napsána v angličtině.
