Stylistic analysis of the language of newspapers

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis concerns the language of printed newspapers from a stylistic point of view. The primary objective is to determine the extent of correspondence between the stylistically distinctive features identified in the analyzed texts and the specialized literature. There are two additional research questions included: 1) How much information do the headlines give away concerning the contents of the text, and does it differ between the quality press and popular press? And 2) To what extent do news reports in the quality press and popular press differ? It includes a theoretical background of stylistics, the style of newspapers, and their visual and content composition. The practical analysis consists of eight selected texts from four different newspapers originating in the USA and Great Britain. The results of the analysis show that the stylistically distinctive features generally correspond to how they are described in the specialized literature. The headlines overall do not reveal too much information, and in the quality press, they are composed more objectively. There are identified several differences between the quality and popular press news reports. The reports from the quality press are more extensive, positioned earlier in the issue, composed more objectively, and usually contain more complex sentence structures.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá jazykem tištěných novin ze stylistického hlediska. Hlavním cílem je zjistit míru shody mezi stylisticky příznačnými prvky identifikovanými v analyzovaných textech a odbornou literaturou. Součástí jsou dvě další výzkumné otázky: 1) Kolik informací o obsahu textu prozrazují titulky a liší se tyto informace v seriózním a bulvárním tisku? A 2) Do jaké míry se liší informační zpravodajství v seriózním a bulvárním tisku? Součástí jsou teoretická východiska stylistiky, styl novin a jejich vizuální a obsahová skladba. Praktickou analýzu tvoří osm vybraných textů ze čtyř různých novin pocházejících z USA a Velké Británie. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že stylisticky charakteristické prvky obecně odpovídají tomu, jak jsou popisovány v odborné literatuře. Titulky celkově neprozrazují příliš mnoho informací a v kvalitním tisku jsou komponovány objektivněji. Mezi zprávami v kvalitním a populárním tisku bylo identifikováno několik rozdílů. Zprávy z kvalitního tisku jsou rozsáhlejší, jsou umístěny na dříve ve vydání, jsou komponovány objektivněji a obvykle obsahují složitější větné konstrukce.
