Mass and radius of neutron stars in binary systems

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se zabýváme studiem možností odhadů hmotností M a poloměrů R neutronových hvězd v rentgenových binárních systémech, konkrétně kvazi-periodickými oscilacemi (QPOs) v rentgenové části spektra binárního systému 4U 1608-52. Vytvořili jsme numerický kód pro zpracování dat, jehož správnost ověřujeme rekonstrukcí výsledných konfidenčních oblastí pro data termonukleárních rentgenových záblesků publikovaných jinými autory. Tento kód využíváme ke zpracování pravděpodobnostních dat z pozorování QPOs. Výsledné konfidenční oblasti získané z těchto dat pak porovnáváme s těmi z rentgenových záblesků.

Abstract:

In this thesis, we study possible constraints on masses M and radii R of neutron stars in X-ray binaries, specifically through the detection of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray part of the spectrum of the binary system 4U 1608-52. We develop a data processing code and we verify the code by processing the data for thermonuclear X-ray bursts published by other authors and reproducing their confidence intervals. After verification, we use the code to process the probabilistic data from QPOs observations. We compare the confidence intervals obtained from these data with those resulting from the X-ray bursts.
