Theorizing Cultural Longevity: The Factors Behind the Divergent Levels of Popularity of Late Victorian Novels

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce zdůrazňuje pojem kulturní dlouhověkosti jako otevřenou otázku v literární vědě, kterou je třeba oddělit od konceptu kanonicity. Zatímco kanonicita se zaměřuje na „hodnotu“ kulturních produktů jako předmětů studia nebo analýzy, kulturní dlouhověkost se více zabývá pouhým přežitím kulturních produktů a zahrnuje jak institucionální, tak neinstitucionální kontexty. Tato disertační práce se zabývá kulturní dlouhověkostí jako vytrvalým přenosem informací o kulturních produktech v čase. Hlavním cílem analýzy jsou pozdně viktoriánské romány (vydané mezi lety 1891 a 1901), vzhledem k vyspělosti nakladatelského průmyslu v tomto období a jeho časové vzdálenosti od současnosti. Vzhledem k mnohostranné povaze problému kulturní dlouhověkosti je v disertační práci použit smíšený metodologický a teoretický přístup. V kapitole 2 je nastíněn pří-stup smíšených metod, který se opírá jak o kvantitativní, tak o kvalitativní analýzy, které jsou nezbytné pro práci s obrovským množstvím informací, která jsou k dispozici pro romány vydané v pozdním viktoriánském období. V kapitole 3 je rozvíjen třístupňový teoretický přístup, který kombinuje poznatky z biokulturní kritiky, kulturní evoluce a síťové vědy do kombinovaného paradigmatu. Kapitola 4 používá kvantitativní pří-stup a testuje hypotézy inspirované biokulturní kritikou a kulturní evolucí. Disertační práce tvrdí, že většina vysvětlení kulturní dlouhověkosti pozdně viktoriánských románů, které jsou vytvořeny na základě jejich obsahu, jsou chybná, a zdůrazňuje význam sítí v tomto procesu. Proto kapitola 5 pokládá základy pro typologii potenciálních faktory, které blokují nebo usnadňují přenosu informací o románech a se zabývá rolemi síťových uzlů (institucionálních i neinstitucionálních), dopadem kanonické hybnosti, adaptacemi na jiná média, důsledky změny reputace, norem, vkusů atd. Teoretický a metodologický rámec této disertační práce uvádí tuto oblast literární vědy do kontaktu se společenskými vědami a zdůrazňuje význam překračování disciplinárních hranic při řešení složitých, mnohostranných výzkumných otázek.

Abstract:

This dissertation highlights cultural longevity as an open question in literary studies that needs to be dissociated from the concept of canonicity. While canonicity focuses on the “worthiness” of cultural products as objects of study or analysis, cultural longevity is more concerned with mere survivability and covers both institutional and non-institutional contexts. This dissertation looks at cultural longevity as the sustained transmission of information about cultural products through time. The main target of the analysis are late Victorian novels (published between 1891 and 1901), due to the maturity of the publishing industry in this period and its tem-poral distance from the present day, which allows for the dynamics of “cultural survival” or “cultural death” of the novels to adequately play out. Because of the multifaceted nature of the problem of cultural longevity, the dissertation uses a mixed methodological and theoretical approach. In Chapter 2, a mixed method approach is outlined that relies on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, necessary for dealing with the massive amounts of data available for the novels published in the late Victorian period. In Chapter 3, a three-pronged theoretical approach is developed, combining insight from biocultural criticism, cultural evolution, and network science into a combined paradigm. Chapter 4 uses a quantitative approach, testing hypotheses inspired by biocultural criticism and cultural evolution. The dissertation argues that content-based explanations for the cultural longevity of novels are often flawed and highlights the importance of networks in this process. Therefore, Chapter 5 lays the groundwork for a typology of potential blockers and facilitators of transmission of information about the novels. This chapter looks into the roles of hubs (both institutional and non-institutional), the impact of canonical momentum, adaptations to other media, the implications of changing reputations, norms, cultural tastes, etc. The theoretical and methodological framework of this dissertation brings this domain of literary studies into contact with the social sciences and underlines the importance of transcending narrow disciplinary boundaries when faced with complex, multifaceted research questions.
