Abstract:

Jak napovídá již sám název, tato magisterská diplomová práce se zaměřuje na roli předmětů v několika vybraných románech P. D. Jamesové, britské autorky psychologicky laděných detektivních románů. Hlavním úkolem této práce bylo detailně pokrýt zvolené téma a zodpovědět otázku důležitosti předmětů v knihách. Důraz byl kladen zejména na nalezení typických představitelů (jako například genius loci a vražedných zbraní), jejich rozdělení do skupin podle druhu a funkce, a analýze jejich působení na děj, zápletku a hlavní postavy. Celá práce byla uzavřena závěrem shrnujícím výsledky analýzy a doplněna třemi podrobnými tabulkami s předměty.

Abstract:

As the title suggests, the thesis concentrates on the role of objects in some books by Phyllis Dorothy James, a writer known for her crime novels with strong psychological aspects. The aim of the thesis was to cover James´s works as thoroughly as possible within the chosen topic and to answer the question why objects are so important in it. The emphasis was put on the most crucial representatives significant for the plot and actions (such as the genius loci and the murder weapons), their symbolism was discussed and they were divided into groups according to their types and function. A set of approximately sixty objects was introduced and the research closed with three complex tables which summarize the findings in each of the novels. The conclusion was that objects can indeed be considered another crucial 'protagonist' of the author´s works, an equal to its human counterparts. The analysis was based on six selected books: Cover Her Face (1962), Unnatural Causes (1967), An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972), Innocent Blood (1980), The Skull Beneath the Skin (1982) and Devices and Desires (1989).
