From repression to detachment: evolution in thinking of Norbert Elias

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vývojem v myšlení Norberta Eliase, zejména pokud jde o otázku vztahu jednotlivce a společnosti. Autorka nejprve představuje Eliasův spis Civilizační proces a následně analyzuje způsob, jakým se v něm uplatňuje koncepce civilizace jako potlačení pudové přirozenosti. Ztotožňuje se s názorem většiny sekundární literatury, že tato koncepce souvisí s vlivem Sigmuda Freuda a rovněž s teorií Thomase Hobbese o vzniku státu z přirozeného stavu války všech proti všem. V polemice s obvyklým pojetím Eliasova myšlení jako víceméně jednotného celku, ve kterém inspirace obou zmíněných autorů nikdy nepřestala hrát rozhodující roli, však upozorňuje na hlubší proměny v Eliasově díle. Na jedné straně zdůrazňuje napětí a problémy v Civilizačním procesu, pramenící z neujasněného přijímání negativního pojetí vztahu jednotlivce a společnosti jako represe, na druhé straně ukazuje, jak v dalších pracích, jako je Společnost individuí, především ale Zaujetí a odpoutanost, Elias dospívá k vědomé revizi své starší koncepce a oprošťuje se od jednostranného Freudova a Hobbesova vlivu, aniž by se musel zříci svého celoživotního přesvědčení o procesním charakteru civilizace a aniž by musel opustit výrazy jako „kontrola“ či „sebeomezení“, ve kterých kritika nesprávně viděla důkaz trvalého vlivu psychoanalýzy. Vrcholem této revize je nahrazení protikladu pudové přirozenosti a potlačení pojmovou dvojicí zaujetí a odpoutanost.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the question of the individual-society relationship as developed in the work of Norbert Elias. The author starts with the presentation of Elias’s The Civilizing Process and proceeds further to analyse the role played therein by the concept of civilisation as repression of human instinctual nature. She agrees with the opinion of most critics who trace this concept to the influence of Sigmund Freud as well as Thomas Hobbes and his theory on the origin of state out of the natural condition of bellum omnium contra omnes. Contrary to the critics’ opinion, however, she rejects the idea that Elias’s work represents a uniform piece in which the influence of Freud and Hobbes never ceased to play the key role. On the one hand, the author emphasizes inner tensions in The Civilizing Process which stem from Elias’s more or less tacit recognition of the notion of repression and the negativity of individual-society relationship. On the other hand, she attempts to demonstrate that in his later works The Society of Individuals and, in particular, Involvement and Detachment he subjected these earlier ideas to thorough revision and eliminated negative consequences of Freud’s and Hobbes’s influence by replacing the opposition of individual nature and repressive society with the conceptual couple of involvement and detachment. Special character of this transformation consists also in the fact that Elias never had to give up his lifetime notion of the civilisation as a process. Neither did he ever have to refrain from using expressions as “control” or “self-restraint” – the concepts which critics like Robert van Krieken mistakenly interpret as a proof of Freud’s and Hobbes’s persistent influence.
