Transformation of tradition: Unmarried women in contemporary China

Abstract:

Neprovdané ženy starší 27 let jsou v současné Číně označovány za zbylé - většinou díky své nezávislosti, vysokému vzdělání a značným ekonomickým úspěchům. Ve své práci se věnuji otázkám, proč jsou "zbylé ženy" považovány za zbylé, z jakého důvodu se tento fenomén vyskytuje právě v Číně a také zda dochází k transformaci zvyklostí. Oddanost společnosti vůči čínské patriarchální struktuře zapříčiňuje, že neprovdané prosperující ženy v Číně jsou považovány za méně způsobilé ke sňatku. Tento jev představuje komplexní problematiku ovlivněnou mnoha aspekty a nelze jej připisovat pouze ženám samotným. Filiální a genderová omezení, setrvávající patriarchální ideologie, vládní politika a neegalitární perspektivy jsou jen některými z význačných prvků, jež hrají roli při jeho vzniku. Prostřednictvím obsahové analýzy, zjišťující odpovědi na výše uvedené otázky, si práce dává za cíl objasnit problematiku jevu neprovdaných žen v soudobé Číně a dále pak proměny tradičních hodnot, utvářejících současnou tamní společnost.

Abstract:

Unmarried women over the age of 27 are in contemporary China labelled as leftover – mostly due to their independence, high education, and strong economic accomplishments. In my thesis, I investigate why "leftover women" are considered leftover, why this phenomenon occurs specifically in China, and whether a transformation of the tradition is taking place. Societal devotion towards the Chinese patriarchal structure causes unmarried prosperous women in China to be considered less marriageable. This phenomenon represents a complex matter affected by numerous aspects and could not be attributed only to the women themselves. Filial and gender constraints, persisting patriarchal ideology, governmental policies, and non-egalitarian prospects are just a few of the prominent elements that play a role in its creation. By eliciting the answer to these questions through content analysis, this thesis aims to shed light on the phenomenon of unmarried women in contemporary China and furthermore on the transformation of traditional values that are forming today’s society within the country.
