John Fiske, an Advocate of Popular Culture

Abstract:

John Fiske, obhájce populární kultury. Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl uvést do českého kontextu mediálního teoretika Johna Fiskeho, který významně přispěl do debat ohledně povahy populární kultury. Přesto, že se jeho teorie mohou jevit jako překonané (největší vliv měly Fiskeho teorie v osmdesátých letech dvacátého století), jeho vliv na teoretizaci populární kultury je nepřehlédnutelný již pro „optimismus“, se kterým o populární kultuře uvažuje. Práce v první řadě mapuje základní teoretické koncepty, které se k Fiskeově pojetí populární kultury váží, jako je sémiotická demokracie, aktivní publikum, potěšení či možnosti rezistence na straně bezmocných. Dále se práce pokouší o přehled kritických pojetí Fiskeových teorií a evropském a americkém kontextu, o pomyslnou konfrontaci mezi Fiskeovým „optimismem“ ohledně povahy populární kultury a „pesimistickými“ přístupy k populární kultuře, zejména frankfurtskou školou. Součástí práce je také překlad vybrané části Fiskeova díla do češtiny a zamyšlení nad možnostmi re-interpretace Fiskeova pojetí populární kultury a jejího subverzního potenciálu ve světle nových komunikačních technologií.

Abstract:

John Fiske, an Advocate of Popular Culture. The bachelor thesis aims at introducing a media theorist, John Fiske, a significant contributor to the debates concerned with the nature of popular culture, into the Czech context. In spite of the fact, that his theories may seem overcome (his work was of the greatest influence in the 80´s of the 20th century), his influence upon the theorization of the concept of popular culture is obvious – be it only because of the „optimism“of his approach. The thesis maps out the key theory concepts linked to the phenomenon of popular culture, such as semiotic democracy, active audiences or pleasure of the resistance potential on the side of the powerless. The work also includes an account of some critical approaches to Fiske´s theories and a confrontation between Fiske´s „optimism“ and more „pessimistic“ views of popular culture, notably the Frankfurt School. Translation of a sample of Fiske´s theories into Czech is also part of this work. Reflection of the possible re-interpretations of Fiske´s work on popular culture and its subversive potential, in the light of the new communication technologies, opens the thesis up to currant debates over Fiske´s legacy.
