The Influence of the Vietnam War on Social and Political Scene of the United States of America

Abstract:

Po druhé světové válce se svět ocitl pod vlivem dvou velmocí. Spojené státy americké se pasovaly do role obránce demokracie a Sovětský svaz rozšiřoval svůj vliv pomocí levicově orientovaných režimů. Kvůli stoupající intenzitě jaderného zbrojení mohl být přímý střet mezi těmito mocnostmi tím posledním. Konflikty se proto přesunuly na zástupná bojiště po celém světě. Jedním z těchto střetnutí byla právě válka ve Vietnamu. Francie byla po druhé světové válce ekonomicky vyčerpána a již nebyla schopná svoje kolonie v Indočíně udržet. Spojené státy ji začaly finančně i materiálně podporovat a po jejím nezdaru a následnému odchodu částečně nahradily její místo. Rozšiřující se vliv komunistů na severu země vedl k rozdělení Vietnamu na severní část pod jejich vedením, podporovanou zejména Sovětských svazem a Čínou, a jižní část, kde Spojené státy pomáhaly spíše autoritářsky zaměřenému protikomunistickému režimu. Narůstající konflikty v zemi postupně vedly k rozpoutání války s americkou účastí, proti které se na domácí scéně USA zvedla doposud největší vlna odporu. Různá protiválečná hnutí vyjadřovala svůj nesouhlas a odpor k válce, což mělo částečný vliv na skutečnost, že se prezident Johnson rozhodl znovu nekandidovat a na jeho místo byl zvolen republikánský kandidát Richard Nixon, který postupně stáhl americké jednotky ze země, a díky tomu protesty postupně ustaly. Protiválečná hnutí byla po celou dobu spíše nesourodým uskupením a jejich vliv k ukončení americké účasti přispěl jen částečně.

Abstract:

After the Second World War the world found itself under the influence of two superpowers. The United States of America declared themselves the defender of democracy and the Soviet Union spread its influence through left-wing regimes. Because of the nuclear weapons develompent, direct conflict between those two superpowers could have been the last. These disputes had to be waged by proxy conflicts. One of those conflicts was the Vietnam War. France was economically exhausted after the Second World War and it was no longer able to hold onto its colonies in Indochina. The United States started to support France financially and materially and after the failure of France, they replace its place in the area. Increasing influence of Communists in the north led to a separation of Vietnam into two parts. The northern part was supported by the Soviet Union and China. In the south the United States helped the authoritarian anti-communist regime. Increasing conflict in Vietnam led to a war with American involvement. The conflict started to raise the biggest opposition on the home scene so far. Antiwar movements of all sorts were declaring their disagreement with the war which partly led to a fact, that president Johnson refused to run for a second term. The Republican candidate Richard Nixon was then elected to his post. He started to gradually withdraw American troops from Vietnam which eventually silenced the protesters. Antiwar movements were rather disparate group and their effect on ending the American involvement was only partial.
