A New View of the Classical Myth in the Fine Arts of the first half of the 20th century

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se soustředí na téma antického mýtu, které se snaží sledovat v rámci definovaného období první poloviny dvacátého století. Práce se pokouší zaznamenat formální a tematické proměny daného námětu v dílech vybraných malířů. Na jednotlivých malbách se snaží posoudit nový pohled na antický mýtus, přínos díla v uměleckém kontextu a zařazení díla do spojitosti doby vzniku. Toto téma je zajímavé, protože náměty z antické mytologie nebyly na konci devatenáctého a na počátku dvacátého století natolik populární jako v předešlých stoletích. Rozvoj abstraktní malby poskytl novou látku - výdobytky moderní doby, průmysl a soudobý život. Legendy se dostaly na okraj zájmů. Přesto se našli malíři, kteří se této tendenci nepoddali, např. Gustav Klimt. Ve dvacátých letech dvacátého století se umělci začali pomalu k námětům z mytologie vracet, mezi tyto umělce můžeme zařadit Pabla Picassa, Maxe Beckmanna a Salvadora Dalího.

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis is concerned with the topic of classical myth which it tries to look into in terms of the defined period of the first half of the twentieth century. The thesis is trying to note formal and thematic changes of the subject within works of art of particular artists. By individual paintings I tried to judge new points of view on the classical myth, the contribution of the work of art in artistic context and classifying of the work of art to the relation with the period of origin. This topic is interesting because at the end of the nineteenth and at the beginning of the twentieth century the subjects from classical mythology weren't as popular as in preceding centuries. Development of abstract painting has brought something new - conquests of modern age, industry and the lifestyle as we know it in these days. Legends have fallen off the centre of attention. However, there are artists who didn't give in to the trend, for example Gustav Klimt. In the twenties of the twentieth century artists slowly started to return to the subjects of mythology. Among these artists we can name Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann and Salvador Dalí.
