Analysis of lay judgements of personality traits of the author on the basis of the morphological characteristics of the informal texts

Abstract:

Rysy osobnosti (RO) člověka se projevují v jeho chování. V průběhu sociální percepce toto chování vnímáme a vytváříme si na základě něj o RO daného jedince odhady, které mohou být více či méně přesné. Za produkt lidského chování považujeme také psaný text. Cílem této diplomové práce je zjistit, (1) zda mohou na základě českých neformálních textů posuzovatelé vzhledem ke skutečnosti přesně odhadnout RO pisatelů, (2) zda se v odhadech navzájem shodují, a (3) zda k odhadům užívají lingvistická vodítka. Práce užívá data získaná v projektu CPACT. Vzorek posuzovatelů (N = 3) byl vybrán příležitostným výběrem, vzorek pisatelů (N = 153) stratifikovaným náhodným výběrem. Pisatelé napsali dva texty, dopis z prázdnin (TXT2) a omluvný dopis (TXT4), které posuzovatelé přečetli a na škálách provedli odhady osmi RO pisatelů. Posuzovatelé se ve výsledku mezi sebou lehce shodovali v odhadech RO samotářský – družný u TXT2, submisivní – dominantní u TXT4 a úzkostný – uvolněný u obou textů. Lehce přesní vzhledem ke skutečným rysům byli pro RO samotářský – družný a svědomitost u TXT2. Navíc posuzovatelé u TXT4 za submisivní označovali osoby ve skutečnosti přívětivé a u TXT2 osoby svědomité, dále u TXT2 označovali za depresivní osoby pasivní. K odhadům posuzovatelé pravděpodobně užívali některých lingvistických vodítek.

Abstract:

The personality traits (PTs) of a person manifest in their behaviour. We perceive this behaviour in a process of social perception and we make our judgements of one´s PTs based on it. Our judgements might be more or less accurate. A written text is considered to be a product of the human behaviour. The aim of the Thesis is to find out whether (1) the lay judges are able to make accurate target-judge judgements of PTs of the authors of informal Czech texts, (2) whether they are able to achieve high inter-judge agreement and (3) whether they use any linguistic cues from the texts. The data were collected in the project CPACT. Accidental sampling was used to obtain the sample of judges (N = 3) and stratified random sampling was used to obtain the sample of writers (N = 153). The writers wrote two texts – a letter from holidays (TXT2) and a letter of apology (TXT4), based on which the judges made their judgements of eight PTs. In result, a moderate inter-judge agreement was found for PTs solitary – sociable in TXT2, submissive – dominant in TXT4 and anxious – relaxed in both texts. A moderate target-judge agreement was found for PTs solitary – sociable and conscientiousness in TXT2. Moreover, the lay judges judged agreeable writers in TXT4 and conscientious writers in TXT2 to be submissive. In TXT2 they judged passive writers to be depressive. They probably used several linguistic cues to form their judgements.
