Dualistic conception in O Físico Prodigioso by Jorge de Sena (including a panoramic translation of the book)

Abstract:

As the title suggests, the thesis offers an analysis of dualistic conception in the novella O Físico Prodigioso by Jorge de Sena, a prominent Portuguese author of the 20th century. Above all, it is a book full of opposites, contrasts, paradoxical pairs, antitheses and other types of binomials. These dualities manifest themselves both on the thematic and structural level. Therefore, we examined all the narrative categories with the exception of narrator. In the first part of the analysis, we thus deal with time, space and action, whereas the second part is an extensive commentary on the identity of the characters of the novella, complicated by duality. The conclusion of the two parts is that the elements of all the dualities are two faces of the same coin, inseparable concepts that tend to synthesis. Other significant part of the thesis is represented by a panoramic translation of the novella into Czech language, which corresponds to more or less three fifths of the original book.

Abstract:

Jak napovídá název, tato práce je především analýzou dualistického pojetí v novele O Físico Prodigioso od Jorge de Seny, významného portugalského autora 20.století, jehož dílo jako celek jsme se v úvodu práce pokusili krátce charakterizovat. O Físico Prodigioso je totiž především kniha nabitá protiklady, paradoxy, antitezemi, ironickými dvojčleny a dalšími typy dualit, a to jak na úrovni tematické, tak strukturální, resp. kompoziční. Zkoumali jsme proto dualitu všech literárních kategorií s výjimkou vypravěče. V první části samotné analýzy se tedy zabýváme prostorem, časem a dějem, zatímco ve druhé rozsáhle pojednáváme o identitě postav, která je dualitou značně komplikována. Ve obou částech pak dospíváme k názoru, že protikladné prvky daných dvojčlenů jsou dvěma stranami jedné mince, neoddělitelnými součástmi, které směřují k syntezi. Neméně významnou součástí práce je kromě teoretické analýzy i její praktická stránka, totiž panoramatický překlad novely do češtiny, který odpovídá zhruba třem pětinám originálu.
