Capture formats with different methods and levels of compression

Abstract:

Filmový obraz je tvořen celou řadou vizuálních výrazových prostředků, které souvisí s aranžmá snímané scény, což je zřejmé. Použitá technologie snímání je neméně důležitým parametrem a výrazovým prostředkem. S tím souvisí volba záznamového formátu, který dál ovlivňuje možnosti postprodukce a tím i výsledný filmový obraz. Teoretická část této práce má za cíl představit vznik digitálních dat a záznamové formáty, do kterých se tato data ukládají. Z důvodu enormního objemu však bývají zatíženy kompresí. Komprese – co to je, proč ji potřebujeme, jak vzniká, co způsobuje? a hlavně: Jaká míra kompresních artefaktů je pro diváka akceptovatelná? To je otázka, na kterou odpovídám v praktické části bakalářské práce. Zúžila jsem pozornost na formáty Apple ProRes a H.264, které jsou v praxi často využívané v různých podobách a mohu s nimi v rámci dostupných kapacit pracovat. Pomocí subjektivního hodnocení expertní skupinou (metoda DSIS) sleduji zhoršení kvality obrazu způsobené kompresními artefakty výše zmíněných formátů. Z výsledků je patrné, že snižování datového toku vede ke zvýšení četnosti artefaktů, především u formátu H.264.

Abstract:

The cinematography image is obviously formed by a wide range of visual means of expression, which are based on the arrangement of the scene. The capture technology used is an equally important parameter and means of expression. This includes the choice of capture format, which affects the postproduction possibilities and thus the cinematography image. The theoretical part of this thesis aims to present the origin of digital data and capture formats, in which the data are stored. Due to the enormous volume, they tend to be affected with compression. Compression – what is it, why do we need it, how is it formed, what does it cause and most importantly: What level of compression artifacts is acceptable to the viewer? I answer this question in the practical part of the bachelor thesis. I focused on the formats Apple ProRes and H.264, which are often used in practice and are available for me to work with. Using subjective quality assessment of an expert group (method DSIS), I monitor the impairment of the image quality caused by the compression artifacts of the formats mentioned above. The results show that decreasing a data rate leads to an increase of the frequency of the artifacts, particularly for the format H.264.
