An Exile Through Language: the Literary In-Between of Nancy Huston

Abstract:

The main objective of this diploma thesis lies in the determination of interrelations between exile, language and content of literary creation of Nancy Huston, the writer who originally comes from Anglophone Canada but who exiled in 1973 to France, and who writes her literary works mainly in French language. The corpus of analyzed literature includes autobiographic essays as well as fiction. The thesis is divided into two parts, where first part studies the theme of exile and the language of literary creation, based on concepts of “Homeric tradition” of Piotr Sadkowski, “migrant literature” of Clément Moisan and “narrative identity” of Paul Ricoeur. The second part of the thesis is focused on the analysis of the chosen novels, where we observe which ways is the author using for creation of “literary in-between” of the characters who are in constant search of their own identity through the “other self”.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl vymezit vzájemné vztahy mezi exilem, jazykem a obsahem literární tvorby u Nancy Huston, spisovatelky pocházející z anglofonní části Kanady, která od roku 1973 žije v exilu ve Francii a svá díla píše převážně ve francouzském jazyce. Korpus analyzovaných děl tvoří jak eseje s autobiografickými prvky, tak i romány. Práce je rozčleněna do dvou částí, přičemž první část zkoumá v autorčiných esejích s autobiografickými prvky téma exilu a jazyka literární tvorby pomocí konceptů „homérské tématiky“ Piotra Sadkowskiho, „migrantské literatury“ Clémenta Moisana a „narativní identity“ Paula Ricoeura. Druhá část práce se pak zaměřuje na analýzu vybraných románů, v nichž sledujeme, jakými způsoby autorka znázorňuje u svých románových postav prvek „literární rozdvojenosti“ a neustálého hledání své identity pomocí „toho druhého“.
