A Comparison of the conception of geisha in selected Japanese and world’s works

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá rozdílná pojetí gejši ve vybrané literatuře japonských i světových autorů, navzájem je porovnává a konfrontuje s realitou. U každého díla je analyzován historický kontext, vliv osobních zkušeností autorů i jejich motivace k sepsání díla. Důraz je kladen především na jejich zpětný vliv na životy skutečných gejš a jejich obraz ve společnosti. Práce odhaluje ovlivnění románu Arthura Goldena orientalismem, stejně jako tendence mladších autorek autobiografických děl, které se snaží vytvářet obraz gejši čistě jako profesionální umělkyně, zatímco starší japonští autoři profesi gejši přiznávají i tělesnou stránku.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses different conceptions of geisha in selected works by Japanese and world’s authors, followed by their comparison and confrontation with reality. Historical context, personal experiences and the motivation for writing are explored in case of each author. The emphasis lies primarily on the effect of the works on the lives of the real geisha and their image within society. This thesis reveals the influence of orientalism on the novel by Arthur Golden, as well as the tendencies of the younger authors of autobiographic works to depict the geisha as purely professional entertainers, while the older Japanese authors tend to admit the carnal aspect of the profession of the geisha.
