English e-gaming slang and its influence on Czech electronic communication: MINECRAFT

Abstract:

This thesis deals with and analyses the lexicon of players of the video game Minecraft described as slang, which is what the theoretical part attends to. In addition, it talks about word borrowing. It describes the influence of these e-gaming Anglicisms including the extent of the impact they have on the Czech language of online gaming. It yearns to reveal why people prefer using certain Anglicisms over their Czech alternatives and delves into the opinions of people about the use of these lexical units. Finally, it mentions, explains and showcases the adaptation processes they go through on the words from the gaming and Minecraft sphere - orthographical, phonological, morphological and word-formational. To answer these questions, a questionnaire was introduced and sent out. A collection of the language material that was formed into a dictionary happened by a careful extraction from different relevant places that collectively cover all language sides to make up for certain shortcomings of these collection points. The results show that Minecraft slang is very commonly known and used among people who have moved around in the gaming sphere. Most people consider Anglicisms positive additions to the language and lean towards using them quite frequently. They usually learn them for the Internet and prefer to use them as they offer a better alternative that can better express what they want to say.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá a analyzuje lexicon hráčů videohry Minecraft označený a popisovaný jako slang, kterémuž se věnuje teoretická část. Také se zde hovoří o slovních výpujčkách. Dále popisuje a zjišťuje v jakém rozsahu působí tyto e-gamingové Anglicismy na český jazyk hráčů videoher. Cílem práce je zjistit, proč lidé upřednostňují používání určitých Anglicismů nad jejich alternativami v češtině a zkoumá názory lidí na toto téma. Nakonec zmiňuje a vysvětluje procesy adaptace, kterými prochází, a to jak ortograficky, ortoepicky, morfologicky, tak slovotvorně. Názorně jsou pak tyto adaptační procesy ukázány na slovech z herní a Minecraft sféry. Ke zjištění odpovědí na tyto otázky byl použit dotazník. Sbírka jazykového materiálu vznikla důkladnou exceprcí z různých relevantních míst výskytů, které se vzájemně doplňovaly, aby pokryly všechny důležité stránky jazyka. Výsledky ukazují, že Minecraftový slang je mezi lidmi orientujícími se v herní sféře velmi známý a často používaný. Lidé také považují Anglicismy za prospěšné a využívají je, a to především protože mnohdy nabízí lepší alternativu, která dokáže lépe vyjádřit to, co chtějí říct. Učí se jim pak především na internetu.
