Factors influencing the ratio of democracy in presidential systems of Chile and Bolivia

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je předložit faktory, které ovlivňují demokracii v Chile a v Bolívii. Tyto země byly pro tuto práci vybrány kvůli tomu, že v jedné z nich (v Bolívii), od roku 2002 dochází k poklesu demokracie. Hlavní výzkumným záměrem textu je tedy vysvětlit tento jev. Nejprve je na dané případy aplikována teorie S. Mainwaringa a M. S. Shugarta. Aplikace této teorie však nevysvětluje zkoumaný jev, naopak dokazuje odchylnost daných případů. Následně je tedy hledána alternativní hypotéza pomocí znalosti teorií o fungování prezidentských systémů. Práce dokazuje, že ve sledovaných případech platí, že k poklesu demokracie dochází v případě hospodářských problémů v zemi, které není schopna politická reprezentace efektivně řešit

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to introduce factors influencing democracy in Chile and Bolivia. The reason why these countries have been chosen for the analysis was that one of them (Bolivia) has been embodying a decline in democracy since 2002. The main research goal of this thesis is therefore to explain this phenomenom. First, the Mainwaring's and Shugart's theory is applied on the cases. However, this theory does not illustrate the examined phenomenon, it only proves the dissimilarity of these cases. Subsequently, an alternative hypothesis is being looked for by means of the knowledge of presidential systems theories. The thesis brings proofs that for the cases examined it is valid that the decline in democracy is caused by economic problems in a country whose political representation is not able of an efficient way of solving them
