Role of the Organization of African Unity/African Union in the Sudanese conflicts resolution

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá řešením konfliktů a rolemi, které v konfliktech sehrávají třetí strany. Konkrétně zkoumá, kterou z předem definovaných rolí sehrála Organizace africké jednoty/Africká unie při řešení dvou fází súdánské občanské války a konfliktu v Dárfúru. Hodnotí zejména snahy organizace o zprostředkování vyjednávání mezi aktéry konfliktu, návrhy mírových smluv či působení operací na udržení míru. Zapojení Organizace africké jednoty/Africké unie do súdánských konfliktů ukazuje postupný vývoj organizace, rozšiřování jejích pravomocí i větší ochotu dané pravomoci využívat.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with conflict resolution and the roles the third parties play in conflicts. In particular, it explores which of the previously defined roles the Organization of African Unity/African Union played in the two phases of the Sudanese civil war and the Darfur conflict. Especially the organization’s negotiating attempts between the actors of the conflicts, the peace agreement proposals and the peacekeeping operations are evaluated. The Organization of African Unity/African Union’s involvement in Sudanese conflicts shows the gradual evolution of the organization, the extension of its powers and the growing willingness to use those powers.
