Playing a musical instrument and working memory

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vlivem cvičení na hudební nástroj na pracovní paměť. Shrnuje nejnovější poznatky z psychologických a neurologických výzkumů zaměřených na hudebníky a kognitivní procesy spojené s hrou na hudební nástroj. Cílem práce je ověřit poznatky již uskutečněných výzkumů v rámci této problematiky. Týkají se faktorů času stráveného cvičením na hudební nástroj, pravidelností cvičení a samotným začátkem hry na hudební nástroj. Práce je též zaměřena komparaci výsledků hráčů na smyčcové a klávesové nástroje. Výzkumný soubor obsahoval 126 osob z řad studentů středních a vysokých škol. Skládal se z participantů, kteří hrají na hudební nástroj v rámci studia konzervatoře případně akademie, amatérských hudebníků a kontrolní skupiny nehudebníků. Osobám byl administrován subtest Digit span z Wechslerova testu inteligence (WAIS III) a následně krátký dotazník orientovaný na míru způsobilosti ve hře na hudební nástroj. Působení hry na hudební nástroj na pracovní paměť z větší části nebylo prokázáno. Rozdíly mezi jednotlivými skupinami hudebníků též nebyly signifikantní.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the influence that practicing a musical instrument has on working memory. The newest psychological and neurological findings concerning musicians and cognitive processing with relation to playing a musical instrument are summarised in it. The aim of this thesis is to verify the results of previously carried-out research concerning the impact of time spent practicing a given instrument, the consistency of practice and the age of first contact with the instrument. The second object of this thesis is to compare the results achieved by string and keyboard instrument players. The research sample consisted of 126 high school and university students and was composed of participants playing a musical instrument as part of their conservatoire or music university education, amateur musicians and a control group of non-musicians. To each person the subtest Digit span from the Wechsler intelligence test (WAIS III) and subsequently a short questionnaire aimed at the level of proficiency achieved in playing their instrument were administered. Evidence of the effect of playing a musical instrument on working memory was not established. The differences between individual groups of musicians were not shown to be significant either.
