Cryptocurrencies - Dangerous speculation or the digital revolution?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje konvenčnímu peněžnímu systému a komparuje jej s kryptoměnami, především s Bitcoinem. Zabývá se možnostmi nahrazení dvoustupňového bankovního systému kryptoměnami a možným rizikům z toho vyplívajících. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části, teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části popisuje hlavní znaky peněžního systému, jeho vznik, vývoj a funkčnost. Rámcem empirické části je výzkumná otázka, zda lze Bitcoin považovat za peníze a zda dokáže nahradit dvoustupňový bankovní systém. V této části práce jsou použity metody kvantitativního výzkumu, komparace a syntézy. Kvantitativním výzkumem je zjištěno, že použití kryptoměn jako platebního prostředku není nyní pro většinu uživatelů určujícím faktorem pro vlastnictví. Syntézou teoretické a praktické části je určeno, že Bitcoin nejsou peníze ve smyslu konvenční monetární teorie a Bitcoin nemůže v současnosti převzít funkce a úlohu centrálních a komerčních bank. Dále je definováno riziko pro ekonomickou stabilitu, v případě, že by kryptoměny nahradili konvenční měny.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the conventional money system and compares it with cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin. It deals with the possibilities of replacing the two-tier banking system with cryptocurrencies and the possible risks arising from it. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes the main features of the monetary system, its origin, development and functionality. The framework of the empirical part is the research question whether Bitcoin can be considered as money and whether it can replace the two-tier banking system. Quantitative research methods, comparison and synthesis are used in this part of the thesis. The quantitative research finds that the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment is not now a factor of ownership for most users. By synthesizing the theoretical and practical parts it is determined that Bitcoin is not money in the sense of conventional monetary theory and Bitcoin cannot currently take over the functions and role of central and commercial banks. Furthermore, the risk to economic stability is defined in case cryptocurrencies replace conventional currencies.
