Assessment of spiritual needs of elderly

Abstract:

The aim: The aim of the graduation thesis was to find out what are the spiritual needs of seniors. We were also detecting whether gender, age, marital status, religion and medical diagnosis influence the spiritual needs of seniors. Methodics: The research was conducted as a quantitative study during the period of April 2016 - February 2017 through a questionnaire in pensioner and social services, also in the pensioner - Úsmev, in the charity house of Saint Kamil, in the daily centre and in the club for elderly people ? Senior club Friends and in the private health facilities Medcentrum, s. r. o. providing an ambulance services. All these facilities are located in Žilina. Data collection was conducted through two questionnaires - Spiritual Needs Survey a FICA Spiritual Assessment Tool. The sample consisted of 104 respondents aged 65 and over 65 who were oriented to person, time and space and agreed with the realization of the research. Results: The need that was detected as most represented in elderly people was the need of the positive attitude (96% of the elderly people), the sense of humor (94% of the elderly people), the need of gratitude (92% of elderly people). It was found out a statistically significant difference in appraising of spiritual needs by seniors with religion and seniors without religion. It was not demonstrated the impact of medical diagnosis on spiritual needs of elderly people as well as was not detected the difference in assessment of spiritual needs of men and women. It was also shown that also age does not influence the spiritual needs of seniors. It was proved that marital status is a factor that affects the spiritual needs of seniors. Conclusion: The largest representation had these needs ? positive attitude, sense of humor and gratitude. It is the difference in appraising of spiritual needs between the seniors with religion and the seniors without religion. It was not proved the impact on diagnosis, gender or age to spiritual needs of seniors. Marital status influence the spiritual needs of seniors.

Cieľ: Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo zistiť aké sú spirituálne potreby seniorov. Zároveň sme zisťovali, či pohlavie, vek, rodinný stav, vierovyznanie a lekárska diagnóza ovplyvňujú spirituálne potreby seniorov. Metodika: Výskum prebiehal ako kvantitatívna štúdia, v období apríl 2016 - február 2017 prostredníctvom dotazníkového šetrenia v Zariadení pre seniorov a sociálnych služieb, taktiež v Zariadení pre seniorov - Úsmev, v Charitnom dome svätého Kamila, v Dennom centre a v klube seniorov ? Senior klub Priatelia a v neštátnom zdravotníckom zariadení Medcentrum, s.r.o. poskytujúcom ambulantnú zdravotnú starostlivosť. Všetky tieto zariadenia sa nachádzajú v meste Žilina. Zber údajov bol uskutočnený prostredníctvom dvoch dotazníkov: Spiritual Needs Survey a FICA Spiritual Assessment Tool. Výskumný súbor tvorilo 104 respondentov vo veku 65 a viac rokov, ktorí boli orientovaní v osobe, čase a v priestore a vyjadrili súhlas s realizáciou výskumu. Výsledky: V najväčšom zastúpení sa u seniorov preukázala potreba Pozitívneho postoja (96% seniorov), ďalej potreba Zmyslu pre humor (94% seniorov) a potreba Vďačnosti (92% seniorov). Bol zistený štatisticky významný rozdiel v hodnotení spirituálnych potrieb medzi seniormi s náboženským vyznaním a seniormi bez náboženského vyznania. Seniori s náboženským vyznaním mali viac naplnené spirituálne potreby. Nebol preukázaný vplyv medicínskej diagnózy na spirituálne potreby seniorov rovnako ako nebol zistený ani rozdiel v hodnotení spirituálnych potrieb u mužov a u žien. Taktiež sa ukázalo, že ani vek neovplyvňuje spirituálne potreby seniorov. Rodinný stav sa preukázal ako faktor, ktorý má vplyv na spirituálne potreby seniorov. Záver: Najväčšie zastúpenie mali potreby - Pozitívny postoj, Zmysel pre humor a Vďačnosť. Je rozdiel v hodnotení spirituálnych potrieb medzi seniormi s náboženským vyznaním a seniormi bez náboženského vyznania. Nebol preukázaný vplyv diagnózy, pohlavia, ani veku na spirituálne potreby seniorov. Rodinný stav ovplyvňuje spirituálne potreby seniorov.
