Roman Baths in Britain

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce jsou římské lázně budované v Británii v době její římské okupace. Jejím cílem je poskytnutí obecných informací o římském lázeňství - o jeho vzniku, původu, typických znacích a jejich následné využití při deskripci čtyř lázeňských komplexů zbudovaných v Británii - Vindolanda (2), Isca Silurum (1) a Aquae Sulis (1). Práce se zabývá většími, veřejnými lázeňskými komplexy, a to především z hlediska architektonického a dekorativního, součástí jednotlivých popisů je též vždy podkapitola zaměřená na dnešní podobu lázeňských objektů. Dalším záměrem je pokus o vypozorování osobitých znaků římských lázeňských zařízení vystavěných v Británii

Abstract:

The primary focus of the work "Roman Baths in Britain`` are Roman baths that were built in Great Britain during the Roman occupation, i.e. between the years 47 and 407 AD. The aim of the author is to offer general information on Roman baths, their origin, typical features and their subsequent use for description of baths complexes built in Great Britain, namely two smaller military bath houses in Vindolanda (Chesterholm), one bigger complex in Isca Silurum (Caerleon) and thermo-mineral baths in Aquae Sulis (Bath). Thus the work deals with larger, public baths complexes, explicitly with respect to the architecture and decorative perspective. As an inseparable part of each of the descriptions is a subchapter focused on the today looks of the bathing establishments. Another objective of the work is an attempt to discover individual characteristics of Roman bathing properties built in Great Britain and also intention to identify factors that formed these distinctions. Vitrius' work De Architectura was used as the most essential source, as for the secondary literature, it is to name the work Baths and Bathing in Classical Antiquity by Fikret Yegül
