Chinese Performance Art and Spirituality

Abstract:

The work examines and analyzes the spiritual aspect of selected Chinese performance art works. It addresses the question: What are the forms, role and importance of spirituality in the works of artists born and based in People´s Republic of China. It focuses on the journey of artist´s physical and mental suffering that appears in implicit form of the unique artistic expression. The theoretical starting point of the work is a theory of Chinese artist Cai Qing (CAI, Qing. Xingwei yishu yu xinling zhiyu. Performance Art and Spiritual Therapy. Beijing: Houlang chuban gongsi. 2013, 251pgs.) It is based on the claim that performance art plays an important role in recovering of the artist´s souls and thus represents a healing, therapeutic function. Thesis deals with spiritual discourse in the context of performance art to define the range of topics related to the spiritual aspects of Chinese cultural and religious traditions. The author finds the answers in correlation analysis of works of six Chinese action artists, and belives that their (un)conscious inspiration to create, was (among the other things) their personal spiritual fulfillment. The thesis points to the clear impact of Chinese cultural and religious traditions and concludes the Daoist Principle of wu wei (non-action) as the most important element emerging in the actions of all artists. Another strong phenomenon found to be present in their works is the Five Elements Theory. Selected examples of Chinese performance art prove spiritual ideas of self-transformation, the principle of “one”, death and significant role of the ritual.

Práca skúma a analyzuje aspekt spirituality vo vybraných dielach čínskeho akčného umenia. Zaoberá sa otázkou aká je jej podoba, úloha a postavenie v tvorbe autorov pochádzajúcich z Čínskej ľudovej republiky. Zameriava sa na cestu telesného a duševného utrpenia autorov zobrazovanú v implicitnej forme unikátneho umeleckého vyjadrenia. Teoretickým východiskom je práca čínskeho umelca a teoretika umenia Cai Qinga (CAI, Qing. Xingwei yishu yu xinling zhiyu. Performance Art and Spiritual Therapy. Beijing: Houlang chuban gongsi. 2013, 251pgs.). Opiera sa o tvrdenie, že akčné umenie zohráva dôležitú rolu pri zotavovaní duše a tým zastupuje liečebnú, terapeutickú funkciu. Pátra po spirituálnych prejavoch v rámci performance artu a jeho východiskách, na základe ktorých vymedzuje okruhy spracúvaných tém súvisiacich so spirituálnymi hľadiskami čínskej kultúrnej a náboženskej tradície. Odpovede hľadá v korelačnej analýze diel šiestich čínskych akčných umelcov. Usudzuje, že ich (ne)vedomou inšpiráciou v tvorbe bolo (okrem iného) spirituálne naplnenie. Poukazuje na zreteľný vplyv čínskej kultúrnej a náboženskej tradície v sfére súčasného čínskeho umenia a dochádza k záveru, že najvýraznejším elementom prítomným v tvorbe všetkých autorov je taoistický princíp wu wei – nekonanie/nejednanie. Ďalší zo styčných bodov nachádza v tematike prírodných živlov, učení o Piatich prvkoch. Na príklade skúmanej vzorky diel si všíma, že spiritualita sa v čínskom akčnom umení prejavuje v aspektoch sebatransformácie, princípe jednoty, smrti a zdôrazňovaní role rituálu.
